Score Media buys SportsTap to create third largest sports app

Score Media announced Thursday that it has acquired SportsTap, its rival free mobile sports application, and by combining it with the company’s existing sports app, ScoreMobile, the Toronto-based company will create the third-largest sports app in the United States, trailing only the sports apps of ESPN and Yahoo! in terms of audience volume.

The acquisition was made for an undisclosed amount.

“ScoreMobile’s acquisition of SportsTap brings together two innovative and popular services and positions us well to deliver even more exciting experiences for sports fans and creative solutions for our advertising partners,” said executive vice-president and COO, Benjie Levy. “This deal further cements our position as a mobile sports leader among the world’s premier sports brands.”

SportsTap is compatible with both iPhones and Androids.

Bruce McGuire works in the music business but loves soccer and aggregation. Which is a great thing for the rest of us.

His blog, du Nord, is a must-read for anyone who enjoys the beautiful game. Think the Drudge Report without the politics. McGuire somehow finds almost every relevant soccer story and keeps the world informed.

Occasionally, he even has terrifying videos.
