Tar Heels announcer Durham retiring after 40 years

Woody Durham, who has been the play-by-play radio announcer for basketball and football games at the University of North Carolina for four decades, is retiring today. Durham (left, beside Duke announcer Bob Harris) has called more than 1,800 Tar Heels games, according to the Winston-Salem Journal. Eric Montross, the network’s color analyst and a former UNC player, said Durham will be remembered as a legendary broadcaster.

“I’ve been honored to work under him. He’s a master of his craft, and that’s the way I just want to remember him, and that’s exactly how we will.”

Durham graduated from UNC in 1963 and took over the play-by-play position eight years later. He called 13 NCAA Final Fours and six national title games, including championship seasons in 1982, 1993, 2005 and 2009. He also did play-by-play for 23 bowl games. He was named North Carolina’s sportscaster of the year 13 times and is a member of the state’s sports hall of fame.
