The Making of Jackass 3D

We suppose we could spend the entire day debating whether the Jackass 3D boys qualified as “athletes,” but we’ll try to settle it quickly. Skateboards? Check. Injuries? Absolutely. Concussions? Yessir.

In other words, close enough to write about in these parts.

Which is good, seeing as Vulture posts a great Q&A with director Jeff Tremaine. He explains how he and the boys go about creating the stunts. It’s some combination of trial and errors, extreme creativity, and (we imagine) booze.

Our favorite line: “And once we cleaned the sh*t off the cameras and saw what was on them, it was unbelievable.”

The movie itself offers an fascinating look at how far the crew has come since their days for thrashing around Pennsylvania suburbs. They are more famous and richer, but noticeably older. The stunts have to hurt more. The running “joke” of the movie is the resigned look Steve-O et al have on their faces when they are about to hurt themselves again. “It’s been 10 years and I’m still doing this,” they all seem to say. It’s the funniest downer movie ever. It is, however, art, damnit! Sh*t and all.
