Traditional Viewers Like Traditional Anchors

This line in today’s NYT piece about Katie Couric caught my eye:

Tom Rosenstiel, director of the Project for Excellence in Journalism, “noted that [Charles] Gibson was only the second anchor in the last 25 years to gain viewers; evening newscasts have been steadily losing viewers overall as television choices have proliferated. But the other anchor to add viewers, he said, was Bob Schieffer, the interim anchor that Ms. Couric replaced. Mr. Schieffer is another anchor Mr. Rosenstiel identified as being in the traditional image.
