UNC Names Angell as Heir to Durham

North Carolina has named Jones Angell as the new radio voice for Tar Heels’ football and basketball, succeeding the legendary Woody Durham who retired in April after 40 years at the mic for UNC.

“I am incredibly honored and excited to become the next play-by-play voice for Carolina athletics,” said Angell, who has been the school’s play-by-play baseball announcer for the last eight seasons. “The guys on the broadcast with me are so good at what they do. Having them there will make this transition much easier.”

Angell graduated from UNC in 2001. In addition to his baseball work, he has been a host and color analyst for the Tar Heel Sports Network the last six years.

He said replacing Durham is not his goal.

“I just want to continue the high level of broadcasting excellence and maintain the passion that Woody had for UNC for so long. He’s been so incredibly gracious during this whole process. I’ve been able to work with and learn so much from him over my time here.”
