US Swimming Fires Coach Without Citing Reason

This would be a huge story… if anyone cared about swimming.

Mark Schubert, the head coach of the U.S. national swim team who was placed on a 60-day paid leave in September, was fired Tuesday for unknown reasons.

“This is a personnel issue and outside of (Tuesday’s) correspondence, we have nothing further,” said Jamie Olsen, a spokeswoman for USA Swimming.

Schubert, previously the head coach at the University of Southern California, served as a coach on every Olympic Team since 1980. He’s been the head of the American swimming program since June, 2009.

At a press conference held Wednesday, he offered to return if the swimmers and coaches wanted him back. His lawyer had stronger words for the USSF.

“At this point I do not feel that his firing was within the parameters of his contract, justified in the eyes of the law or fair in any way whatsoever,” Michael Bernstein said.

This controversy will continue to play out… just not on Sportscenter.
