Today’s AM TV story in the NYT, “New Chapter in the Morning Wars,” focuses on GMA senior EP Jim Murphy. But some of the most interesting paragraphs involve Diane Sawyer. She has committed to GMA until early 2007 — but then what?

“Whether she will extend her tenure beyond that may well hinge on how successful Mr. Murphy (and his deputy, Tom Cibrowski, the executive producer) are in helping her and her team make a serious run at ‘Today’ this fall,” Jacques Steinberg writes. Sawyer says she’s impressed by Murphy’s “confidence and his optimism.” But she says she hasn’t made any decisions about her future, and doesn’t know when she will.

“I’m sorry if it sounds like a dodge,” she said. “I truly am looking ahead and enjoying this part. And there is plenty of time to think about what remains after — when, and whether.” More…
