Anchor Mike Pomeranz, a Former Minor League Pitcher, Leaving KARE for San Diego Padres

Mike Pomeranz is leaving KARE for a broadcasting job with the San Diego Padres, the station announced today.

Pomeranz has been with KARE since 2006, anchoring the NBC-affiliate’s 5, 6, and 10 p.m. newscasts.

“It’s been great to have Mike on the KARE 11 team and help set the stage for him to fulfill his dream,” said KARE president and general manager John Remes. “We wish him and his family the very best.”

It’s not yet clear exactly what Pomeranz’s role will be with the Padres, but he’ll certainly draw on his experience as a minor league pitcher.

Before his TV news career, Pomeranz spent four years in the minors, in the Minnesota Twins system, before a shoulder injury ended his career in 1992.

“KARE 11 has been great for my family and me these last six years,” Pomeranz said. “It took the opportunity of a lifetime to pull me away.”

With the Padres, Pomeranz will have the opportunity to work with legendary sportscaster Dick Enberg, who is currently the team’s play-by-play announcer.

Pomeranz’s last day at KARE will be March 23.
