Allen, who said he is not retiring, told viewers in his farewell, “[The] longest farewell tour in television history comes to an end tonight. As you’ve probably heard by now I’m wrapping up a nearly 39 years here at 13 to go try some other things while I’m still upright.” He went on to thank the people he’d worked with over the years then added, “I will see you again soon. I need a drink.”
Allen had been with the station since 1974. The station posted a page celebrating Allen’s career with links to some of his stories and a quote from Allen summing up his thoughts on leaving.
“Whenever the last day comes, it’s going to be real emotional because I’ve been through marriages, my daughter was born here, my whole adult life has been in this building.”
