Boston Reporter Trapped in Gunfight: ‘I’ve Never in my Life Been in a Situation Like This’

WHDH reporter Adam Williams provided a dramatic firsthand account of the gunfight between Boston police and the marathon bombing suspects from Watertown last night.

Williams was trapped behind the police barricade during the gunfight, saying he was “so close he could smell the gunpowder.”

“I’m just staying down using the car as shelter,” Williams said. I’ve never in my life been in a situation like this … clearly we’re not in a situation where police would want us, but we can’t get out right now.” Watch:

Boston Stations Live Overnight as Police Search For Marathon Blast Suspect

It was a night of fast-moving developments in Boston, where stations were live overnight with coverage of the manhunt for the second suspect in the marathon bombings.

Some notes from the coverage: WCVB‘s special report, anchored by Heather Unruh and Ed Harding, was simulcast on CNN before Jake Tapper took over the network’s coverage around 1:30amET. WFXT‘s coverage, anchored by Mark Ockerbloom had several reporters spread throughout the city, including Mike Beaudet and Erica Richie. And WBZ got the first interview with the uncle of the suspects, who told the CBS O&O that they “do not deserve to live on this earth.” Watch it here.

Poynter’s Al Tompkins says the overnight coverage is an important reminder of “valuable it is to have experienced journalists on the air who know the city like the backs of their hands”:

I watched a WBZ anchor David Wade, for example, describe street-by-street where police were heading. Say what you want about TV anchors, but here is a guy with years on the street as a reporter and a Massachusetts native.

Boston media are like that. Days like this remind us of why we need journalists who have lived in the market they work in for a long time and who know how to report a story that doesn’t rest.

WCVB Reports ‘Imminent’ Arrest of Boston Bombing Suspect

Boston ABC affiliate WCVB was the first to report an “imminent” arrest in the Boston bombings case Tuesday afternoon.

WCVB investigative reporter Janet Wu reported the break in the case at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. WCVB’s tweet beat the Associated Press, which was the next source to report an imminent arrest, by 12 minutes.

#BREAKING: According to @wuwcvb, an arrest in #BostonMarathon bombing is imminent or has already taken place.

— WCVB-TV Boston (@WCVB) April 17, 2013

After the initial reports of an imminent arrest, there were some quick reports — including on CNN and Fox News — that a suspect had been arrested and was being transported to the federal courthouse in downtown Boston. According to the Boston Police, an arrest has not yet been made.

WCVB had been sourcing CNN to report the arrest had been made. Once CNN walked back their reporting, WCVB clarified on the air that there were conflicting accounts of the case’s progress. The station maintains an arrest is imminent.

Local stations in the top five markets broadcast special coverage of his departure and flight to Castel Gandolfo, the Vatican’s vacation retreat.

ABC, NBC and CBS affiliates in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and Dallas broadcast national coverage from their affiliated networks of the Pope’s final farewell.

Dorner Standoff Leads to Ratings Spike For LA Stations

Tuesday’s coverage Christopher Dorner standoff and shootout gave stations in Los Angeles a big ratings boost for February sweeps. Local stations at least doubled their usual viewership, according to the Los Angeles Times:

KABC-TV led the way, with 708,000 viewers, followed by KCBS (680,000 with a KCAL simulcast), KTLA (259,000), KNBC (221,000) and KTTV (169,000). KCBS said it was the station’s highest-rated 5 p.m. newscast since at least 2004 and was nearly five times the previous average so far this month.

The Times reports that ratings fell considerably when the local stations cut away from the Dorner standoff for President Obama’s State of the Union address.

LA Stations Pivot From Dorner Coverage to State of the Union

Despite breaking news in their backyard, local stations in Los Angeles pivoted away from coverage of the Christopher Dorner manhunt to broadcast President Barack Obama‘s State of the Union address Tuesday evening.

CBS O&O KCBS, NBC O&O KNBC, ABC O&O KABC and Fox O&O KTTV all switched from wall-to-wall Dorner coverage to State of the Union coverage provided by their respective affiliated networks around 6pmPT. Dorner and police engaged in a shootout in Big Bear shortly after 4pmPT Tuesday afternoon. The cabin he the ex-L.A. cop was believed to be hiding in went up in flames later in the evening.

CW affiliate KTLA and independent station KCAL were the only stations to stay in coverage of the Dorner search. Dorner is believed to be dead inside the cabin.

VIDEO: CBS’ Carter Evans Caught in the Crossfire of Christopher Dorner Shootout

CBS News correspondent Carter Evans found himself in the middle of a shootout between San Bernardino Country, CA authorities and murder suspect Christopher Dorner, who has led police on a widely-publicized manhunt over the past four days, Tuesday afternoon (video above).

Evans was reporting via phone from Big Bear on KCBS when the shots exploded behind him. “I hear gunfire from several directions. The area that the helicopter seems to be circling is an area about 100 feet ahead of me, just directly ahead of me,” Evans said. “That seems to be the area that everyone is focused on.”

Evans remained remarkably calm while the events unfolded in front of him, occasionally staying silent for long chunks of time so viewers could hear the gunfire. At one point, someone can be heard yelling at Carter to “get the f-ck out.”

KCBS-KCAL reports Evans is safe. More video of his reporting from Big Bear after the jump. continued…

LAPD Requests Stations Avoid Showing Officers’ ‘Tactical Movements’ in Manhunt Coverage

Broadcast media outlets in Los Angeles have been asked to avoid showing the “tactical movements” of officers during live coverage of the manhunt for Christopher Dorner, the ex-LAPD officer who allegedly shot four police officers Thursday morning.

“The Los Angeles Police Protective League respectfully requests that media outlets broadcasting live images from Big Bear discontinue showing the tactical movements of officers searching for Christopher Jordan Dorner,” a representative of the union wrote in an email to broadcast media outlets Thursday afternoon. “We request the assistance of the media in helping to protect the officers searching for this murder suspect.”

LA stations have been in various degrees of continuing coverage throughout the day. The stations have provided aerial coverage over Big Bear, where police have been focusing their search efforts. The news helicopters have occasionally captured shots LAPD officers in the park (like in the screengrab above, from KTLA‘s coverage).

A representative for the union said the stations have been receptive to the request.
