Dayton ABC affiliate WKEF unveiled a new high definition set over the weekend. Devlin Design Group, which designed and installed the set for the station, has details about the new features:

The set is composed of large scenic walls with graphics on acrylic that are lit from behind with color-changing LED’s.  A contemporary wave design interspersed throughout adds a touch of sophistication to the overall look. “We are re-doing the entire set,” Phil Dubrow, VP-GM at the Altoona CBS affiliate, told the Mirror. “The clarity will be much better. Everything is getting upgraded from the studio cameras, set, graphics and logo. We are adding a new weather lab and adding weather cameras around the viewing area.”

Dubrow said Nexstar is in the process of upgrading many of their stations, and that WTAJ is the first to get a makeover this year.

“It will change the way people see things. The clarity will be better,” he said. “Everybody is jazzed up; there is a lot going on here.”

WICS, Sinclair’s ABC affiliate in Springfield, Ill., has debuted a new high definition set designed by Devlin Design Group.

“Our goal was to have a new set that would not only replace our current look with a more modern and visually exciting location for our newscasts, but also to provide us with more options for presenting local news in new and exciting ways,” WICS news director Katie Faye said in a statement.

WCHS, the ABC affiliate in Charleston, W.Va, debuted a new high-definition set designed by Devlin Design Group on Saturday. New features include a rear projection screen and a large video wall, as well as a rolling kiosk that can be used in all areas of the set.

Matt Malloy announced the HD transition on the 4 p.m. newscast yesterday. WROC newscasts are currently taking place on a temporary set while the old set is dismantled and the new one is built. Newscasts on WUHF, the Fox-affiliate that is operated by WROC through a shared service agreement, will also be transitioning to HD, according to a statement on the station’s website.

“We’re very excited about the changes here and we hope you are too,” Malloy said. “We’re going to have more details about News 8 in HD in the coming weeks.”

WDTN, the NBC-affiliate in Dayton, is launching high-definition newscasts this weekend.

WHP, the CBS-affiliate in Harrisburg, PA, has made the switch to high definition and unveiled a brand-new set.

The new space, designed by Devlin Design Group, features an expansive video wall consisting of six 50-inch monitors that can either display one image or a series of images.

“Viewer feedback has been wonderful,” WHP vice president and general manager Holly Steuart said of the station’s new HD look. continued…

Fox-affiliate WALA produced the station’s first HD broadcast for Saturday’s 9 p.m. news, anchored by Renee Dials and weathercaster Matt Barrentine. WALA’s newscasts have originated from a temporary set since last month.

NBC-affiliate WPMI also debuted its new set, designed by Devlin Design Group, over the weekend. The redesign included a compete overhaul of the weather system, as well as the addition of several monitors behind the anchor desk.

WLUK, the LIN Media-owned Fox-affiliate in Green Bay, debuted a new, HD-optimized set this week (video above).

“For over a year now we have been planning and building out for presenting news and weather in high definition,” WLUK president and general manager Jay Zollar explained, as the station unveiled its new set. “Our goal has been to have a visually appealing newscast but also to construct a studio that provides for lots of flexibility and supports our commitment to providing the best local content, balanced news and severe weather coverage.”

Salt Lake City Fox-affiliate KSTU is set to debut a brand-new, HD-optimized studio on Monday.

“The project has been 18 months in the making,” KSTU president and general manager Tim Ermish told The Salt Lake Tribune this week.  “When Local TV LLC acquired the station in 2008, they were kind of surprised at what they bought.  They couldn’t believe the cramped space we were working out of.”

In addition to unveiling its new studio, KSTU is also premiering a new 4:30 a.m. newscast on Monday. continued…

The concept for the set design was a collaboration between KATC and AR&D, according to the station. The 5 p.m. newscast on Monday, which included the debut of a new graphics package, was the first from the redesigned space.

“Our goal was to provide the people of Acadiana with a newscast that can stack up against those seen in markets  10 times our size — one the entire community can be proud of,” news director Letitia Walker said in a statement.

Nexstar announced in February that it would be investing significantly in its Scranton duopoly ahead of the switch. The station was outfitted with new HD cameras, a redesigned studio, enhanced forecasting and weather presentation tools, and upgrades for master control.

WALA’s newscasts have been broadcast from a temporary set (pictured) for the past several weeks while the new set is under construction, according to the station’s Facebook page.

“We’re building a brand new set at the moment,” WALA reporter Andrew Perez wrote. “We are temporarily using another set in the very back of our studio … should only be a few more weeks before we unveil the brand new set and Fox10 News in HD.”

WALA will be the third station in the market, after WEAR and WKRG, to produce HD newscasts. WPMI also has plans to upgrade to HD this Spring.
