Payton currently works on investigative pieces part-time in addition to her midday anchor duties and Fry currently works on the assignment desk. Payton will will be replaced on the 11 a.m. newscast by Christine Haas, who will be the midday anchor in addition to the 4 and 5 p.m. anchor.

An undercover WHDH producer was certified to grow and posses medical marijuana at two Massachusetts clinics after showing doctors the x-rays of a dog (video above).

Massachusetts law permits doctors to give a marijuana certification to possess and grow a 60 day supply “after a full assessment” of the “patients medical history” they think the “benefits would outweigh the health risks,” according to WHDH. The producer went to three clinics with just the x-rays — which were of a yellow Labrador’s elbow — and no detailed medical records. She was able to obtain a certification at two of the three health clinics.

“He asked me a couple of questions, but he didn’t do even a basic exam. No heart rate, no blood pressure, he didn’t examine my elbow. The whole thing took seven minutes,” the producer said of one clinic.

WGCL investigative reporter Jeff Chirico was punched in the chin and knocked to the ground while reporting a piece for the Atlanta CBS affiliate.

Chirico’s was investigating Richard Wilder, who reportedly began operating a business in Gainesville just weeks after he was charged with seven counts of theft by deception and once count of racketeering. While reporting the story, Donald Wilder, presumed to be Richard’s father, approached Chirico and threatened him, punching him in the face and knocking him to the ground.

WGCL says Chirico was not seriously injured. His full report airs tonight on WGCL’s 11 p.m. newscast.

After an oil tanker recently ran into the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, all eyes turned to the Bar Pilot who was guiding the vessel out of the bay.  Dan Noyes, investigative reporter for the San Francisco ABC owned station KGO, got a bit of a rude hello when he showed up at the Bar Pilots office in San Francisco yesterday looking for answers.

Noyes told TVSpy, “This was a total surprise, especially because I was not there to interview this particular bar pilot. As I was heading into their offices, I saw a man getting out of a car with a “ship pilot” license plate, figured he might be someone important, so I introduced myself. That’s when the profanity began. He was upset at past investigations I’ve done into bar pilots, and another ship accident that spilled oil into the bay.”

Noyes is no stranger to conflicts while on a story. “Dealing with confrontations is part of the job, but rarely does it turn physical,” added Noyes. “I’ve had maybe a dozen incidents over the years, been shot at, punched, pushed. I think the actions speak volumes about the person we’re interviewing — why would they be so upset at simple questions? continued…

In the course of her investigation about illegal animal trafficking in the Los Angeles fashion district, KNBC reporter Ana Garcia obtained internal LAPD emails suggesting the department make more arrests to avoid bad media coverage (video above).

Los Angeles passed a law last year that makes it illegal to buy animals from sellers on the street. Robbi Peele, an investigative consumer reporter from the station, emailed the department and asked how many arrests had been made since the law had passed; an LAPD officer returned her email and said only one arrest had been made. In a second email — one that was clearly not supposed to be sent to KNBC — another LAPD staffer, Andrew Smith, warned that the story could be “a black eye” for the department: continued…

Marszalek’s post pointed out Jeremy Finley, a reporter for Nashville NBC affiliate WSMV, for his story on possible security breaches at the Nashville airport and Indianapolis NBC affiliate WTHR for its story about Indiana inmates taking advantage of prison policies allowing them early release.  The article also highlights Birmingham, AL, CBS affiliate WIAT (pictured) for its report on the effect industrial pollution is having on a North Birmingham low-income neighborhood and WJBK, the FOX O&O in Detroit for revealing the practice of recycling used mattresses, then selling them as custom made.

“I think local news has a bad rap among purists,” Marszalek told TVSpy.  “But how can you not be impressed with an effort like WIAT’s in Birmingham? That project is huge for a news department of its size. And then there are stories like the one Jeremy Finley did on Nashville Airport employees bypassing screening, which really exposes a national issue. We all have to partially undress to get through security and thousands of people swipe a badge? That’s crazy stuff.”

The piece was reported by Tony Pipitone, a veteran investigative reporter who has covered the Anthony story for WKMG since it broke. Pipitone’s report focuses on computer evidence “showing Anthony researched how to kill with poison and suffocation on the same on the same afternoon her daughter, Caylee, was killed by poison and suffocation.” Anthony was found not guilty in June 2011.

The Orlando Sentinel‘s Hal Boedeker, who saw the report before it aired Tuesday night, reports Pipitone’s investigation began while he was reading Jose Baez‘s book over the summer. Boedeker calls the report a “bombshell”:

During a series of ongoing reports on Ashley King, a man who was living in a foreclosed home and clashing with the neighbors, the WSMV crew noticed two teenage girls at the house. After the report aired, investigative reporter Jeremy Finley received a call from a woman who identified one of the girls as her runaway teenage cousin.

Finley relayed the information to police, who tracked down King over the course of several days and discovered that he was harboring the two runaway girls in the house. King was arrested.

It’s just taking a walk and trying to take a look at the city,” LeDuff told TVSpy in a recent interview. “I needed to take all that stuff I had been writing about — the fire department, the police department, municipal contracts, county corruption, that whole thing, and sort of put together a letter, some kind of commentary about who we are and how we live.”

Randi Levin, a top manager for Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, abruptly resigned on Friday after a KCBS investigation revealed that her husband owed over $56,000 to the LA Department of Water and Power.

KCBS reporter David Goldstein had been investigating the department’s inability to collect millions of dollars from people who rent land from it when he discovered that Levin’s husband owed money.  Goldstein confronted Maurice Levin last week about the $56,000 in unpaid rent he owed to the city (video inside). continued…

A Milwaukee school bus driver is suing WTMJ reporter Robert Koebel, as well as the station’s owner, Journal Communications, over an investigative report Koebel did in which he publicly confronted the driver about her prostitution past.

Earlier this year, Koebel did background checks on a bunch of Milwaukee school bus drivers and found that one, Melissa Dumas, was busted by an undercover police office several years ago and convicted on a misdemeanor prostitution charge. Koebel also found that Dumas was arrested over a decade ago on marijuana possession.

A recent report from WBZ, the CBS O&O in Boston, was the subject of a “Beat the Press” panel this weekend on WGBH, Boston’s public television station.

The report in question was an investigation of private businesses freeloading off public land by WBZ reporter Joe Shortsleeve (watch inside). Colman Herman, a contributing writer for CommonWealth magazine, wrote about the same topic in a series of articles that were published earlier this year. The WBZ report made no mention of Herman’s reporting, despite the fact that both reports cited the same problematic leases as evidence. continued…
