KLKN Sues Former Reporter for Breach of Contract

KLKN, the Lincoln, NE ABC affiliate, filed suit Monday against former reporter Melina Matthes saying she broke her contract to take a job in Omaha, reports the Lincoln Journal Star.

Matthes left KLKN in September for Omaha’s FOX affiliate, KPTM.  The Journal Star reports Citadel Communications, which owns KLKN, is looking for $55,000 in damages.  According to the article, that sum works out to, “nearly twice the annual salary KLKN paid Matthes — plus attorneys’ costs.”

Matthes began working for KLKN as a news intern and worked her way up to weekend producer and reporter before leaving for the Omaha station.

KOLN Anchor Vanessa Flowers Out at 6 and 10 P.M.

Vanessa Flowers is being moved off the anchor desk for the 6 and 11 pm. news at KOLN, The Lincoln Journal Star is reporting.

One year after replacing departing Serese Cole, Flowers has been moved to the Noon newscast.  She will continue to anchor the 5 p.m.

Her move prompts other line up changes which are, as general manager Jason Effinger told the Journal Star, all part of the Lincoln market’s increasing appetite for news:

“As the demand grows (for news), we are trying to grow with it,” said Effinger, who noted KOLN’s staff has grown 35 percent since 2009.

Chief Meteorologist Fred Campagna Out at WLNE

Chief meteorologist Fred Campagna is leaving WLNE, the ABC-affiliate in Providence, next month, GoLocalProv reports.

“At the appropriate time, I went to channel 6 management with a reasonable proposal that I thought would allow me to stay at the station for, at least, the remainder of my contract (Aug 2013),” Campagna told GoLocalProv. “The station dismissed my proposal out of hand, and we agreed to terminate the contract on July 31.”

Campagna, who handles the weather forecasts on the 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts, has worked at the station for 14 years. He will reportedly be replaced by Kevin Coskren, who is currently chief meteorologist at KLKN, the ABC-affiliate in Lincoln, NE.

VIDEO: Student Shadowing KLKN Meteorologist Caught in Background of Live Shot

A student who was apparently shadowing KLKN chief meteorologist Kevin Coskren for a career education class, got stuck following Coskren a little too closely.

When KLKN went to Coskren for a live weather update at the top if its 6 p.m. newscast, the kid was sitting right behind the meteorologist.  Realizing that they were live, the kid slowly slides out of the frame (video above). Read more
