Marvin Rhodes Named KEYC General Manager

Marvin Rhodes has been named general manager at KEYC, United Communications Corporation’s CBS affiliate in Mankato, Minn.

Rhodes has held several television management jobs, including as vice president of operations for TCT Network, program manager for KPTV in Portland, Ore. and assistant general manager as KTVL in Medford, Ore. From 2008-12, he was an administrator of personal income tax and compliance with the Oregon Department of Revenue.

“Marvin believes in the power of broadcasters to make a community better — better for residents, better for business, better for future generations,” United Communications Corporation president Lucy Brown Minn said in a statement. “We’re delighted to welcome him back into broadcasting, where he has made important contributions during a career on the air and in the executive office.”

Rhodes begins at KEYC May 6. He replaces Dennis Wahlstrom, who retired in March after 25 years as general manager.

General Manager Dennis Wahlstrom to Retire After 37 Years at KEYC

KEYC general manager Dennis Wahlstrom has announced that he will retire from the Mankato CBS affiliate next year.

Wahlstrom’s KEYC career began in 1975, when he joined the station as an account executive. He has been vice president and general manager since 1988. He told station staffers Thursday that his last day will be March 31, 2013.

KEYC’s parent company, United Communications Corporation, will begin the search for a new VP-GM soon, according to a station statement.

Mankato’s KEYC Adds Local News at 5

Beginning in two weeks, viewers of KEYC, the CBS affiliate in Mankato, MN, will be able to watch their local news at 5 p.m.

In a statement released on the station’s website, vice president and general manager Denny Wahlstrom said, “This is something we believe fits in our role as public servants. What better way to do that than to give the public what it needs during this time – news and information.”

The newscast will be anchored and produced by Nicole Winters who said in the posting, “I’m ecstatic about this move. I’m thrilled to return to Mankato, and I’m excited to bring a new product to our viewers.” Winters, who returned to the station after two years in Sioux Falls added, “It’s great that I am reunited with this great crew, and it will be fun to work with Mark (Tarello) on-air once again. I will work hard to bring news and information to our viewers in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa.”

Annie Stensrud, the former KEYC weekend anchor who was arrested for DUI weeks after slurring her words while anchoring a weekend newscast, is speaking out.

Mallory Peebles Says Goodbye to KEYC

Mallory Peebles signed off yesterday from KEYC, the CBS-affiliate in Mankato.

Peebles, the weekend evening anchor, wrote on Facebook that she is joining a station in Anchorage. She has been with KEYC since the beginning of the year. In honor of her last newscast, Peebles shared some of her favorite blooper moments (video above).

Ex-KEYC Anchor Annie Stensrud Sentenced for DUI

Annie Stensrud, formerly the weekend anchor at Mankato CBS-affiliate KEYC, has been sentenced to probation, according to the Associated Press.

Stensrud was arrested for DUI just two weeks after she appeared intoxicated during a KEYC Sunday-night newscast, which she said at the time was due to medication she was taking. Stensrud pleaded guilty to the DUI charge in March.

Stensrud will avoid a 1-year jail term if she follows the conditions of her probation. She was ordered to pay $1,015 in fines and fees, according to the AP.

KEYC Anchor Annie Stensrud Pleads Guilty to DWI

KEYC anchor Annie Stensrud has pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated, according to WCCO. She will be sentenced on May 29.

Stensrud, the weekend anchor at the Mankato CBS-affiliate, was arrested for DWI in December. WCCO reports that Stensrud’s blood alcohol was 0.31, nearly four times the legal limit.

The anchor’s DWI arrest was just two weeks after she appeared to be slurring her words during a KEYC newscast. At the time, Stensrud said she had been “sick for some time” and her performance was the result of medication she was taking. She has not been seen on KEYC since that incident, although she is still listed on the station’s website as the weekend anchor.

>Update: Stensrud’s bio was taken down from the KEYC website today. News director Dan Ruiter told WCCO that she is no longer employed at KEYC.

Local Newspaper Wrestles with Coverage of ‘Drunk’ KEYC Anchor

In a recent column, the managing editor of the Mankato Free Press wrestled with whether the newspaper appropriately covered the tribulations of KEYC anchor Annie Stensrud, following her erratic behavior during a newscast in early December.

After video of Stensrud’s seemingly drunk delivery went viral and made her the butt of jokes on “Late Show with David Letterman,” she was arrested and charged for drunk driving. The Free Press covered all of these developments.

“We had a healthy debate on this in our newsroom,” Free Press editor Joe Spear wrote. “Some argued we shouldn’t really be hiding this event because, after all, alcohol abuse was, and probably still is, a huge issue in this town. Others argued we don’t cover every DWI in this way.” continued…

Known for Slurred Newscast, Anchor Annie Stensrud Charged with DWI

Annie Stensrud, the KEYC anchor who became a viral sensation after slurring her way through a newscast in early December, has been formally charged with drunk driving, following her arrest on December 21st.

Stensrud is facing one gross misdemeanor charge of Driving While Impaired as well as two misdemeanor DWI charges, according to KEYC.

The Mankato Free Press reports that a urine test administered just over an hour after Stensrud was arrested registered a blood-alcohol level of .31, nearly four times the legal limit.

Stensrud, who has not appeared on KEYC since the slurred newscast, was arrested just before noon on the 21st after police received an anonymous tip that a woman was driving drunk through Mankato. continued…

KEYC Anchor Annie Stensrud Scheduled In Court Early Next Year

KEYC anchor Annie Stensrud has retained a lawyer for an early 2012 court date, according to the Mankato Free Press.

KEYC has had no comment since Stensrud’s arrest.

Stensrud was arrested on December 21 after an anonymous caller tipped off police to an apparently drunk driver on Highway 14 in Mankato. A subsequent test of her blood-alcohol level found her at nearly three times the legal limit to drive. The Free Press reports the anchor has obtained an attorney and her case should be in court sometime in early 2012.

Stensrud made headlines when video of her slurring her words during a newscast earlier this month went viral. The anchor apologized for the newscast, calling it “uncharacteristic” and blaming it on medication she was taking at the time. She has not appeared on KEYC since then.

Hours after news of Annie Stensrud‘s DUI arrest broke, Mankato CBS-affiliate KEYC released a statement addressing the incident on their website:

Stensrud, you may recall, made national headlines when video of her slurring during a newscast went viral. She told station management that she was taking some medications at that time that caused the intoxicated–like appearance and behaviors.

KEYC General Manager Denny Wahlstrom says that because it is a personnel matter, procedures need to be followed according to station policy, and that no further comment will be made at this time.

Two Weeks After Slurring Words During KEYC Newscast, Annie Stensrud Arrested For DUI

KEYC anchor Annie Stensrud, who appeared earlier this month to be slurring her words on a Sunday night newscast, was arrested yesterday for DUI, the Mankato Free Press is reporting.

Stensrud has not appeared on the Mankato CBS-affiliate since December 4. Video of the newscast, which Stensrud was unable to finish, went viral and led to much speculation that the anchor was drunk.

Stensrud issued a statement apologizing for her “terrible” performance, saying, “I’ve been sick for some time and taking medication, and have missed a lot of work lately.” In an interview with WCCO radio, KEYC general manager Dennis Walhstrom said the anchor was “sick,” not drunk.

Stensrud was arrested Wednesday morning after an anonymous resident called the North Mankato Police Department to report “an intoxicated person was leaving a Roe Crest Drive residence in a vehicle,” the Free Press reports. After a bulletin describing the car was put out to law enforcement, Stensrud was stopped on Highway 14. continued…

My performance last Sunday night was terrible, and for that, I apologize. I’ve been sick for some time and taking medication, and have missed a lot of work lately. I’m on my way to feeling better and hope to be back at full strength soon. I appreciate everyone’s understanding and even more so, their support.
