Suspicious Package Prompts WSIL Evacuation

A suspicious package forced the evacuation of Harrisburg, IL, ABC affiliate WSIL this morning.

The station said employees were allowed back in the building after after authorities “placed the item in a container and carried it away from the building.”

The FBI and local police are still investigating.

Kentucky Station Catches Republican Senators Huddling Over Shutdown Spin

Paducah, KY, NBC affiliate WPSD caught a glimpse of two leading Republicans talking about how they were going to talk about the shutdown.

WPSG news director Bill Evans told TVSpy the station had asked for an interview with Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell. When he showed up in the right spot, “An NBC producer/camera team hooked the Senator up and the producer asked questions while we recorded the answers here in Paducah.”

While he was hanging out after the interview and WPSD was still recording Rand Paul, the junior Senator from Kentucky, approached the Republican Minority Leader and asked, “You got a second?” Read more

Kyle Mounce Joins WRTV From WPSD

Meteorologist Kyle Mounce is joining WRTV in Indianapolis from WPSD in Paducah, Ky.

Mounce, an Indiana native, will be the weekend meteorologist and weekday weather reporter at ABC affiliate WRTV. He has worked at NBC affiliate WPSD since 2008.

“We are happy to welcome Kyle back home to Indiana. He will be contributing to our live weather coverage on TV, on-line at theIndyChannel.com and on our expanding mobile and iPad news and weather apps,” news director Terri Cope-Walton said in a statement.

Josh Morgan Named News Director at WREX

Josh Morgan has been named news director at WREX, the NBC affiliate in Rockford, Ill., TVSpy has learned.

Morgan comes to WREX from WPSD in Paducah, Ky., where he has been an executive producer for the morning newscast since December 2011. Prior to WPSD, he spent four years at WLUK in Green Bay, where he produced news and sports.

Morgan replaces Mike Costello, who left WREX in December for a job with the Rockford Park District.

Anchor Emily Eddington Says Goodbye to WSIL

After six years at WSIL, Emily Eddington signed off from the Harrisburg, Ill. ABC affiliate Friday morning (video above).

Eddington joined the station in 2006 as an associate producer and later became the weekend reporter, producer and anchor. She has been anchoring the station’s weekday morning newscast since 2008. Read more

Meteorologist Matt Rudkin Joining WSBT

Meteorologist Matt Rudkin is moving from WSIL in Harrisburg, IL to WSBT in his hometown of South Bend.

“I am blessed to have had the opportunity to learn & grow in southern Illinois, but I am looking forward to working in my hometown and being near my family again,” he wrote on Facebook. “Thanks to all of you for a great year!!”

The move is a return to WSBT for Rudkin, who interned at the CBS-affiliate earlier in his career.  [h/t Jake's DTV Blog]

Mike Smythe Comes Out of Retirement to Lead KBSI

Mike Smythe, who retired as vice president and general manager of KFVS in November, has been tapped to lead KBSI, KFVS’s rival in the Paducah, KY-Cape Girardeau, MO market.

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to return to the area and join the KBSI,” said Smythe, who will also oversee KBSI sister station WDKA.  “Having competed against the stations for so many years, I have a full appreciation and respect for their capabilities and market presence.”

Smythe spent thirteen years at CBS-affiliate KFVS.  He began as the station’s general sales manager before being promoted to VP-GM, a position he held for eleven years. Read more

Anchor Laura Emerson Joining WPSD From WUPW

After 16 years as the primary anchor at Toledo Fox-affiliate WUPW, Laura Emerson is signing off from the station tonight.

Emerson will anchor the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts at WPSD in Paducah, a station she called “very solid and competitive.”

“I was impressed with the people when I went down to visit,” Emerson told the Toledo Blade.

Emerson’s husband, WUPW weekend weathercaster Bruce Slusher, will stay in Toledo until their home is sold. Read more

Kristin Crowley Joins WSIL In Harrisburg, IL

Kristin Crowley has joined WSIL, the ABC-affiliate in Harrisburg, IL, the station announced yesterday.

Since 2010, Crowley has been a general assignment reporter for WLUK, the Fox-affiliate in Green Bay. She will be the weekend anchor on WSIL.

Crowley replaces Emily Finnegan, who has anchored the weekend newscasts since May. Finnegan is moving to weekdays, where she will be paired with Edan Schultz on the 10 p.m. newscast. In her new role, she will also focus on consumer-related reporting.

Jennifer Horbelt Joining KOAA As Morning Anchor

Jennifer Horbelt, who signed off from WPSD in Paducah yesterday, has been named the new morning anchor at KOAA in Colorado Springs, TVSpy has confirmed.

Horbelt will begin at KOAA on December 19. She replaces Georgiann Lymberopoulos, who is leaving the station after 17 years to raise her infant twins.

“Jennifer is bright, compassionate and full of life,” KOAA general manager Evan Pappas said in a statement. “After a nationwide search, we found Jennifer, the perfect addition to our number one morning team.”

Horbelt began her career as in intern at WPSD and worked her way up to evening anchor over the course of her five years with the station. (Watch video of her sign-off from WPSD inside.) Read more
