Strong Growth For WCVB’s Morning Newscast During February Sweeps

WNYW‘s “Good Day New York” isn’t the only local morning show that had a successful February sweeps period. Boston ABC affiliate WCVB showed significant growth during the sweeps period on its early-morning newscasts.

WCVB’s early morning newscast, which runs from 4:30 to 7 a.m. and leads into “Good Morning America,” was up double digits in both Total Viewers and A25-54 viewers compared to the same sweeps period last year, according to WCVB. The station’s 4:30 a.m. newscast had a 34% Total Viewer advantage over the second-place newscast, and beat all the competition combined in A24-54 viewers.

Additionally, ABC’s “Good Morning America” on WCVB widened its lead over NBC’s “Today” on WHDH. “GMA” on WCVB won the sweeps period, including the day when “Today” on WHDH was broadcast live from Boston.

Dorner Standoff Leads to Ratings Spike For LA Stations

Tuesday’s coverage Christopher Dorner standoff and shootout gave stations in Los Angeles a big ratings boost for February sweeps. Local stations at least doubled their usual viewership, according to the Los Angeles Times:

KABC-TV led the way, with 708,000 viewers, followed by KCBS (680,000 with a KCAL simulcast), KTLA (259,000), KNBC (221,000) and KTTV (169,000). KCBS said it was the station’s highest-rated 5 p.m. newscast since at least 2004 and was nearly five times the previous average so far this month.

The Times reports that ratings fell considerably when the local stations cut away from the Dorner standoff for President Obama’s State of the Union address.

“We were more than happy to renew Phil; its ratings have improved,” Randa Minkarah, senior vice president of Fisher Broadcasting, told TVNewsCheck. “The advertisers like Phil, too.
Study: Sometimes a TV is Just a TV

Despite a growing trend of connecting TV sets to the internet so viewers can watch TV and surf the web, a recent study shows consumers are using their new connected TVs to do one thing, watch TV.

The study, conducted by consumer research company NPD, shows that six out of ten consumers who own a connected HDTV are watching what they call “Over the Top” video services through the TV instead of using the device to tweet, post on facebook or read books or magazines. The culprit? Too much choice.

There are six or more types of devices bringing the Internet to HDTVs: the TV itself, video game consoles, Blu-ray Disc players, streaming media set top boxes, TiVo, and a few audio/video receivers. While 15 percent of HDTV displays are connected directly to the Internet, that number increases to 29 percent of HDTVs screens due to these other devices. This is driving the availability of around two connected eco-systems on the same TV screen, leading to a confused user-experience as consumers have more than one way of accessing their favorite TV apps. continued…

Nielsen and Twitter to Measure The Talk About TV Shows

In a nod to second screen viewing habits, where viewers interact with their laptops, tablets or smart phones while watching TV, Nielsen has partnered with Twitter to create the “Nielsen Twitter Rating.”

The new ratings system will allow TV stations to measure both who is watching their show and who is talking about it in the social media sphere, which may help advertisers and TV stations alike engage with their audiences more effectively.

“Twitter has become the world’s digital water cooler, where conversations about TV happen in real time,” said Chloe Sladden, Twitter’s vice president of media. “This effort reflects Nielsen’s foresight into the evolving nature of the TV viewing experience, and we’re looking forward to collaborating with Twitter ecosystem partners on this metric to help broadcasters and advertisers create truly social TV experiences.” continued…

Milwaukee Stations See Ratings Rise For Second Presidential Debate

The latest presidential debate proved more popular with viewers in Milwaukee than the first as 43,000 more households tuned in to watch Barack Obama and Mitt Romney square off a second time, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

NBC affiliate WTMJ averaged an 11.3 during the debate, ABC affiliate WISN pulled in a 10.3, FOX affiliate WITI saw a 6.9 and CBS affiliate WDJT drew a 3.7. A rating point in Milwaukee is equal to 9,100 households.

While the numbers may sound high, The Journal Sentinel offered a sobering comparison, while 293,000 Milwaukee households tuned in to Tuesday night’s debate, 473,000 watched the Green Bay Packers beat the Houston Texans on Sunday night.

Three of Top Five TV Markets Lose Households

Nielsen just released its local television market estimates for 2013. While the report shows no change in rankings for the top markets, it does show the number of TV Homes declined in New York (#1), Chicago (#3) and Philadelphia (#4). Philadelphia showed the biggest drop, losing a little more than 44,000 households over the course of the year. However, Los Angeles (#2) did see a big jump with an increase of nearly 54,000 households.

The decline in TV Homes reflects the trend across the U.S. with an overall drop of -475,620 households over a one year period.

The top 38 markets remained the same, with the shuffling beginning in market 39 as Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo-Battle Creek, MI moves up three spots from last year.

See the full rankings, including where your market stands, after the jump:

“We’re going to No. 1,” Michaelsen said in a recent interview with the Cincinnati Enquirer. “That’s our goal.”

WCPO, perennially in second place behind CBS-affiliate WKRC, has overhauled its staff in recent months.
Super Bowl XLVI earned a 47.8 overnight rating, 7% higher than Super Bowl XLII when the Giants defeated the Patriots on Fox. The rating is less than one percent behind the two highest rated Super Bowls–XLV (2011) between the Packers and Steelers on Fox and XXI (1987) between the Giants and the Broncos on CBS.

The game was the highest rated NFL game ever in the Boston market, pulling in a 56.7/81 overnight rating/share. The Indianapolis market registered a 56.4/79 rating. continued…
