Dunn has anchored WGGB’s morning newscast since 2008. She began her television career in 2006 as a reporter at WAGM, the CBS affiliate in Presque Isle, Maine. In addition to anchoring the morning and noon newscasts, she is WGGB’s medical reporter.

Dunn signs off Wednesday from WGGB. She is rumored to be joining a station in Albany.

“The fact is that there was no place for people to turn if they wanted news at an atypical time,” Ward said. “The 4 o’clock newscast was a vehicle for us to deliver the day’s happenings to a group of people who aren’t around to watch the 6 o’clock news and perhaps don’t stay up to watch at 11 p.m. ”

Station manager John Hesslein said that when the 4 p.m. newscast is preempted for national happenings, like it was for the inauguration of President Barack Obama, the viewers begin calling the station.

“We started the 4 p.m. newscast three years ago to do something different and give the viewers what they were asking for,” Hesslein said. “And if it’s not on for some reason, the people let us know they want their 4 o’clock news back. It has steadily grown in popularity since we kicked it off and this is just the next step as we continue to grow in the Pioneer Valley.”

Chris Pisano

Pisano was most recently the morning anchor at WRTV in Indianapolis, a job he left in March for family reasons. Before that, he spent seven years at KCTV in Kansas City.

“Throughout my broadcast career, I’d always harbored the hope… dream perhaps… of settling back in New England,” Pisano told Bottom Line Communications. “But for whatever reason, my career brought me to the Midwest where I worked, lived, and raised a family for more than 15 years.”

Pisano will be an anchor and reporter for WGGB.

Brushway was sent to the scene to cover the gas leak for the Springfield ABC affiliate. He was one of 20 people injured in the explosion, which happened shortly after he arrived on the scene.

“I called my producer, I said, ‘hey look, it doesn’t really look like anything’s happening, looks like they’re kind of wrapping it up here, can I come back to the station?’ He’s like ‘yeah, we got what we need,’” Brushway recalled. “No less than five seconds later, boom. Next thing I know, I’m just on the ground, lying in glass. There was just debris falling everywhere, and this is the videographer. In April, the Springfield, Mass. ABC affiliate brought on Dan Williams and Kim Zachary, a husband-and-wife team team of local radio hosts, to anchor the newscast. On Tuesday, the station announced on Facebook that the pair would no longer be at the helm:

After plenty of internal deliberation and your feedback, we’ve decided to steer 40 in the Morning in a ‘newsier’ direction. As such, Dan and Kim will be moving on to other opportunities. We tried to strike a balance between news and fun, but it was a challenge to get those elements to always mesh well. The hourlong newscast will air from 7 to 8 a.m. and will be the lead-in program to the weekend edition of ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

The station has not yet announced who will anchor the newscast, which will be the only weekend news on WGGB.

On Monday, Mueller started a job as a reporter for Bay News 9, the local cable news station in Tampa.

“God has opened a door and I am thoroughly and humbly grateful,” Mueller wrote in a recent post on his Facebook page.

Dan Williams and Kim Zachary, a husband-and-wife team who have been anchoring together on Springfield local radio since 1995, will take over at the anchor desk on April 23. The pair’s radio contracts were not renewed by Clear Channel Communications earlier this year.

Kriger is now walking around and evidently in good spirits following the accident.

The station ran a quick segment about Kriger’s visit during its evening newscasts on Tuesday, and anchor Elysia Rodriguez reported that Kriger is “starting to feel a lot better” and “looking forward to getting back to work soon.”

“Many of you have sent get well wishes to Barry,” reads a statement on Springfield NBC-affiliate’s website. “Here at our 22News studios, we’ve received dozens of cards and letters for Barry. We’ll be bringing all of them to him today.”

Krieger, who has been with WWLP for more than 20 years and anchors the station’s 5:30, 6 and 11 p.m. weekday newscasts, is expected to make a full recovery. The station plans to feature a report on his homecoming on the evening news tonight.

“22News has been receiving many calls and e-mails recently about where Barry Kriger has been,” the NBC-affiliate told viewers this week.  “Barry was recently in an automobile accident while on vacation. He sustained some extensive injuries.”

Kriger, who has been with WWLP for over 20 years and anchors the station’s 5:30, 6, and 11 p.m. weekday newscasts, is currently in the hospital.

“He will be out of work for an unknown period of time,” WWLP reported on Thursday, “but he is expected to fully recover.” continued…

“I’ve been back and forth every weekend to take care of my mom who has been sick for the last several months,” Masco said of his departure. “This became extremely frustrating! I worked closely with my management to work out an exit and they were tremendously helpful!”

Masco’s departure has been linked to this on-air incident last week. News director Jim Tortora told TVSpy that Masco’s departure and the exchange were unrelated.

Masco said he was moving to Philadelphia and would be filling in on Fox O&O WTXF “from time to time,” but a Fox spokesperson tells TVSpy that Masco is not scheduled to appear on the station.

In April, Mueller abruptly resigned from WGGB after someone posted a video on YouTube of him acting erratically while MC-ing a fund-raising gala. Mueller later admitted to having a “few drinks” before the event–which was held in honor of an 11-year-old boy who hanged himself after being bullied at school–and eventually went public about his battle with alcoholism.

Mueller celebrated seven months of sobriety over the Thanksgiving weekend and he is keeping people updated about his ongoing struggle with regular posts on YouTube. continued…

“At the beginning, I was so unhappy with the person that posted the video but now I’m grateful to them,” Mueller told TVSpy. “They saved my life.”

Mueller has since sought help for his alcoholism and, as of today, he has been sober for 43 days. He has travelled a great distance during those 43 days (as evidenced by the Day 1 photo at right), moving beyond the initial humiliation caused by the YouTube video and focussing his energy on becoming a better, healthier person.

The early wake-up time and long hours required for his job anchoring WGGB’s morning newscast left Mueller, a recent transplant to Springfield, feeling isolated. “The shift was enabling me,” Mueller says. On a typical day, he would wake up at 2:00 a.m. and return home from work around 3:00 p.m., at which point he would spend the rest of the day drinking. continued…
