Jim Blue Coming Back to Toledo as WNWO News Director and Anchor

WNWO has announced Jim Blue will join the Toledo NBC affiliate as news director and 6 p.m. anchor.

“I’m tremendously excited about rejoining WNWO at a time of incredible renewal at the station and in the community,” said Blue. “We’ve all sacrificed in recent years to achieve a new vitality in our economy and in our city. Now I hope to build upon WNWO’s recent successes and work to provide a fresh, independent journalistic voice in Toledo.”

Blue, who comes to the station from WFFT in Fort Wayne, IN, worked for WNWO once before from 2002 to 2008. continued…

VIDEO: Toledo Anchor Rescues Pitbull, Searches for Owner on Air

Angi Gonzalez, anchor for WNWO in Toledo, used her chicken dinner to rescue a stray pit bull found wandering outside the NBC affiliate’s studios.

In the report aired on WNWO and posted to the station’s website, Gonzalez can be seen feeding the dog and later carrying the stray pooch to her car. The station is updating viewers on the dog’s condition and subsequent search for her owner on its facebook page, its website, and on air.

The station said the pooch is on hold until 6 p.m. tomorrow. After that, the dog will be given a behavior evaluation and possibly put up for adoption. continued…

WTVG Adds Two Meteorologists and a Reporter

Toledo ABC affiliate WTVG has made three new hires, according to the Toledo Blade: Ross Ellet (left), Nichole Langley (center) and Daryl Kirkland-Morgan (right).

Ellet is a meteorologist who joined WTVG from the Ohio News Network, which shuttered earlier this year. Before that, he was a weekend meteorologist for KHBS-KHOG, Hearst Television’s duopoly in Fayetteville, Ark.

Langley, also a meteorologist, will serve as WTVG’s weekday traffic anchor and reporter and will also be an occasional weather anchor. She comes from KFBB in Great Falls, Mont., where she has been the morning meteorologist since 2010. continued…

Tina Shaerban Says Goodbye to Toledo’s WTOL

Tina Shaerban is signing off today from WTOL, the CBS-affiliate in Toledo, according to the Toledo Blade.

Shaerban, the morning traffic reporter at WTOL, has been with the station for two years. She has been anchoring the 9 a.m. newscast during Melissa Voetsch‘s medical leave. Shaerban is moving back to her hometown, Cleveland, with her family.

“She brings a natural joy with her to our newsroom every single day. It’s the kind of brightness and enthusiasm that’s not easy to find,” news director C.J. Hoyt said. Hoyt noted the station is searching for a replacement for an early August debut.

Susan Ross Wells Says Goodbye to WTVG

After 20 years at Toledo ABC-affiliate WTVG, Susan Ross Wells will anchor her final broadcast on July 30. She has taken a position as director of health care marketing at the University of Toledo.

“I feel like I’m ready for a new challenge. It feels like a new chapter for me, a new adventure,” Wells told the Toledo Blade. “I’m so proud of the work I’ve done here and that we’ve all done in this almost 20 years. I have met exciting people, told important stories, and am very proud.”

Wells joined WTVG in 1992 and has anchored several different newscasts during her tenure at the station. She currently anchors weekdays at 5:30 p.m. continued…

Meteorologist Kelly Heidbreder Joins WTVG in Toledo

Kelly Heidbreder has joined Toledo ABC-affiliate WTVG on an interim basis.

Heidbreder, who was most recently a reporter and meteorologist for rival WNWO, will work as a weekend meteorologist, according to the Toledo Blade.

“She is a candidate for the job to replace [meteorologist] Kristen Emery on mornings Saturday and Sunday,” executive news director Brian Trauring told the Blade. “We’re going to see how that goes. So far she’s off to a great start.”

Former D1 Athlete Named WNWO Sports Anchor

Therese Vinal, a former Division 1 volleyball player, is joining WNWO in Toledo as the station’s weekend sports anchor.

“Therese is a sparkplug! Her energy is infectious,” WNWO news director Amulya Raghuveer said, announcing the hiring. “She’s bright, hard-working, and extremely personable.”

Vinal comes to WNWO after several years reporting and anchoring for Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area, a high school sports show that airs on Comcast SportsNet California. She played volleyball for four years at the University of Colorado, where she was named to the Big 12 Conference’s All-Academic First Team.

WEYI Hires Assistant News Director

WEYI has hired Neille Giffune as assistant news director.

In April, WEYI’s owner, Barrington Broadcasting, tapped news director Kathy Reynolds to oversee sister station WNWO in Toledo, in addition to leading the news department at the Flint NBC-affiliate. Giffune will assist Reynolds as she splits time between both stations.

WUPW to Debut Morning Newscast in June

A new weekday morning newscast will premiere on Toledo Fox-affiliate WUPW June 11, according to the Toledo Blade.

WUPW recently merged with CBS-affiliate WTOL as part of a shared services agreement in Toledo. The hour-long newscast will feature an anchor new to Toledo and existing WTOL-WUPW personnel, according to the Blade.

WPUW will also transition to high definition ahead of the newscast’s premiere next month.

Heart Condition Forces Anchor Melissa Voetsch to Take More Time Off From WTOL

Toledo’s WTOL announced this week that anchor Melissa Voetsch is taking another medical leave due to a heart condition.

Voetsch, who anchors the morning and 9 a.m. newscasts at the Toledo CBS-affiliate, began having health problems in November after she had a virus that severely lowered the functionality of her heart, according to the station.

“We wanted to let you know that she’s going to be taking an extended break from WTOL to make sure she’s 100 percent healthy,” Chris Vickers told viewers on Tuesday. “The good news is she does continue to improve every day and this break is exactly what her doctors think she needs to fully recover.” continued…

WNWO Names Will Kunkel Sports Director

Toledo NBC-affiliate WNWO has hired Will Kunkel as its new sports director.

Kunkel comes to WNWO from KVRR, the Fox-affiliate in Fargo, ND.

“Will exudes tremendous leadership qualities. His commitment to local coverage on-air and online will raise our game,” WNWO news director Amulya Raghuveer said, announcing the move.

A graduate of Medill, Kunkel is replacing Eric Haubert at WNWO. His first day is set for June 4. continued…

Gary Yoder Named VP-GM at Mobile’s WALA-WFNA

Gary Yoder has been named vice president and general manager of WALA-WFNA, the LIN Media duopoly in Mobile. His appointment is effective immediately.

Yoder has been vice president and general manager of WUPW since 2009. WUPW, the Toledo Fox-affiliate, merged with WTOL, the CBS-affiliate in the market, last month. Prior to his appointment as VP-GM, he served as the station’s general sales manager.

“Gary is an accomplished broadcast executive who brings a forward-thinking approach to multiplatform news, sales and promotions,” Scott Blumenthal, LIN Media’s EVP for television, said in a statement. “He also has a genuine, heartfelt commitment to meeting the needs of our viewers and advertisers.” continued…

In Toledo, WTOL-WUPW Merger Moving Forward

The shared services agreement between Toledo CBS-affiliate WTOL and Fox-affiliate WUPW is expected to become official today, according to the Toledo Blade. Under the terms of the agreement, WTOL will handle WUPW’s news programming.

Beginning Monday, the combined six evening newscasts will be a mix of on-air talent from both stations. Management and sales personnel from WUPW have moved into the WTOL building, but the two teams will remain separate, the Blade reports. continued…

WEYI News Director Kathy Reynolds Tapped to Oversee Toledo Sister Station WNWO

Kathy Reynolds, who last June was named news director at WEYI in Flint, has been tapped to oversee the news department at Barrington Broadcasting sister station WNWO in Toledo.

In her new role as regional news director, Reynolds will split time between Michigan and Ohio.

“Kathy has proven that she has a strong sense of how a newscast should look, and feel,” Barrington president and CEO Becky Butcher said today in an email announcing the move.

Longtime Toledo Meteorologist Stan Stachak Retiring, WTVG Announces His Successor

WTVG chief meteorologist Stan Stachak announced his retirement this week, and the Toledo ABC-affiliate has tapped morning meteorologist Jay Berschback as his successor.

“The goal is to continue to build on the proud tradition of coverage that Stan has built at the station,” WTVG executive news director Brian Trauring said. “We are thrilled to have such an experienced and personable meteorologist already on staff that is able to succeed Stan. These are big shoes to fill but Jay is the perfect person to lead our weather coverage.”

WTVG also announced that current weekend weathercaster “Blizzard” Bill Spencer would replace Berschback on the station’s weekday morning newscasts. continued…
