Alexis Smith Ready For KIRO Traffic Debut

Alexis Smith‘s first day on-air as KIRO morning traffic reporter was informally announced on twitter by meteorologist Brian Monahan.

Monahan tweeted a shot of Smith (pictured right) practicing for her Monday morning debut. “Well welcome @AlexisASmith to our team on Monday.. Rehearsing this morning! #goteam @KIRO7Seattle.”

KIRO news director Bob Jordan confirmed the move with TVSpy. Smith joined the Seattle CBS affiliate from Dallas ABC affiliate WFAA.

Julie Grauert Joins WPIX From Rival WNYW

Julie Grauert is joining WPIX, Tribune’s CW affiliate in New York City, as a morning traffic reporter and evening general assignment reporter. Her first day at the station will be May 13.

Grauert comes from rival WNYW, the Fox O&O in New York City. She has previously worked at KPTV-KPDX in Portland, Ore. and KNBN in Rapid City, S.D.

“Julie has a strong local news background. She brings a reporter’s inquisitiveness to traffic coverage, and that will benefit our viewers,” WPIX news director Mark Effron said in a statement.

WJLA Adds Traffic Reporting to Partnership with Local Radio Station

Washington, D.C. ABC station WJLA and local news radio station WTOP have already teamed up to deliver news and weather reports to local viewers and listeners. Soon, the two media outlets will share traffic reporting as well.

Starting tomorrow, WJLA reporter Amanda Meadows will deliver traffic updates from the WTOP “Glass enclosed nerve center” six times an hour between 5:00 and 7:00 a.m. weekdays. Between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m., Meadows will report twice an hour.

“Viewers can plan their commute by watching [Good Morning Washington] and then continue with WTOP’s radio reports when they are in the car or on the Metro,” WJLA news director Doug Culver told TVSpy. continued…

Atlanta Traffic Reporter Arrested for DUI

Elle Duncan, morning traffic reporter for Atlanta NBC affiliate WXIA was arrested for DUI over the weekend.

“I am greatly embarrassed for my actions early Sunday morning,” said Duncan in a statement posted to the station website. “I have been reminded — in a very difficult way – that any amount of alcohol can impair us. I take full responsibility for my actions. I apologize to my fans, our community, and my 11Alive family.”

WXIA added, “We are relieved that no one was injured and will be giving Elle the time she needs to deal with this personal incident.” continued…

WTXF’s Kacie McDonnell: The ‘Little Sister’ of ‘Good Day Philadelphia’

Kacie McDonnell, the morning traffic reporter on Philadelphia Fox O&O WTXF, talks to the Philadelphia Daily News about her career. Despite WTXF being her first job in television, McDonnell said she has been “accepted with open arms” by the “Good Day Philadelphia” team:

She said that her lack of experience has never been an issue with the “Good Day” team headed up by anchors Sheinelle Jones, Mike Jerrick and Karen Hepp.

“There has not been an ounce of any bad feelings or ill will, not at all,” she said. “They accepted me with open arms. I’m kind of like the little sister of the group. We’re totally a family.

“Definitely, there was something to prove, being right out of college, but I think slowly, and with the help of everyone at the station – on air and behind the scenes – I’m starting to figure out who I am on a professional level.”

WABC Traffic Reporter Named Spokesman for Website Fighting Parking Tickets

Joe Nolan, traffic reporter for New York ABC owned station WABC, has been named the face of ParkingTicket.com.

“It’s a perfect fit,” Nolan said in a statement. “I’ve been helping people navigate the streets of New York City since 1979 and I’m proud be lending a hand to ParkingTicket.com which puts up a fight for the average Joe, the man or woman who’s put in the often difficult position of driving AND parking, two of the most challenging things New Yorkers can attempt.”

KFOX Adds Traffic Reporter Lissette Garcia

Lissette Garcia is joining El Paso Fox affiliate KFOX as a traffic reporter, according to the El Paso Times.

Garcia, who is Miss Florida 2011, previously worked as an associate producer and traffic anchor at WPLG, the ABC affiliate in Miami. She replaces Kandolite Flores, who left the station to join the Humane Society of El Paso.

Garcia began at KFOX on Monday.

Houston Police Arrest Man For Stalking KPRC Traffic Anchor Jennifer Reyna

Houston police have arrested a man accused of stalking KPRC traffic anchor Jennifer Reyna, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Christopher Olson was arrested Wednesday in his apartment. His bail was set at $80,000. Olson, who has been trailing Reyna since September and has tried to approach her in the station parking lot, violated a 2007 court order that prohibited him from having contact with her.

In 2007, Olson drove his car through the front doors of the station twice, causing $5,000 worth of damage.

Houston Police Looking for Man Charged With Stalking KPRC’s Jennifer Reyna

Houston police are looking for a man charged with stalking KPRC traffic anchor Jennifer Reyna, the Houston Chronicle reports:

Investigators said Christopher Marcus Olson, 38, has been stalking KPRC-TV’s Jennifer Reyna since Sept. 14, disregarding a no-contact order issued by a judge in May 2007 after he twice drove his vehicle through the front door of the news station.

Since last September, police said, Olson has followed Reyna as she left work, parked by her vehicle in a parking lot next to the news station and called her at her job.

“Based on the documented incidents of the defendant following the complainant (Reyna) and waiting for the complainant outside of her place of employment, (she) is in fear of her life,” according to an arrest warrant filed on Thursday.

Olson has followed Reyna in his car on numerous occasions. In May 2007, he drove his vehicle through the front doors at KPRC, causing more than $5,000 in damage.

Traffic reporter Jennifer Reyna turned her back on a live traffic camera at just the wrong moment on a recent KPRC newscast (video above).

Reyna was discussing a highway accident that could be seen on the screen behind her. As she turned away to wrap up her report, a car swerved and crashed into an SUV, which in turn hit the fire truck that was on the scene for the first accident. “So, yeah, it looks like that one’s going to clear up,” Reyna said. continued…

LA Stations Pool Resources for Carmageddon II

Los Angeles is gearing up for another “Carmageddon,” a weekend closure of a 10-mile strech of the 405 Freeway. One of the major complaints during the last Carmageddon weekend was the helicopter noise from the media’s aerial coverage, so LA stations are pooling resources this time around to keep things quiet. Rick Terrell, executive director of the RTNA of Southern California, shares details on the “unprecedented” arrangement with the Los Angeles Times:

Rather than sending up a helicopter from each station for each news broadcast, Terrell said, pilots will fly in shifts. Only one helicopter from member stations — including KABC, KCBS/KCAL, KMEX, KNBC/KVEA, KTLA and KTTV –- will go up at a time. He said the pool plan calls for three flights per night on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings prior to each major newscast at 6 p.m., 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. respectively. He said one helicopter will also be sent out about 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Traffic Reporter Tammy Dombeck Out at KXAS

Traffic reporter Tammy Dombeck said goodbye to KXAS on Friday after 12 years at the Dallas NBC O&O.

Dallas media blogger Ed Bark reports Dombeck and KXAS could not come to an agreement on her new contract. She has a standard non-compete clause in her contract which will prevent her from working on-air in Dallas for the next six months, Bark says.

Beginning this week, Andi Parker will be handling the traffic reports for the morning newscast on an interim basis.
