Longtime KOMO Anchor Eric Slocum Dead at 54

Former KOMO anchor Eric Slocum, who worked at the Seattle ABC-affiliate for a decade and also served as an anchor for the KOMO radio station, died this past Saturday. He was 54.

“It is with great sadness that we’ve learned of the death of Eric Slocum,” reads a statement posted on KOMO’s Facebook page today.

Slocum’s death was ruled a suicide, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He reportedly suffered from depression for several years.

Slocum worked in radio before becoming an anchor and reporter with KOMO-TV in 1990. He stepped away from TV in 2001 and worked as an anchor for KOMO radio until 2008, when he left to work full-time on a memoir. continued…

Anchor Jennifer Winters Leaving KVAL After 17 Years

Today is anchor Jennifer Winters‘ final day at KVAL.

Winters has worked as an anchor and reporter at the Eugene CBS-affiliate since 1994. The station reported this week that Winters is leaving for a marketing job at a local engineering firm.

“Feeling a bit of gratitude overload here as my current and former news colleague[s] bid me goodbye,” Winters tweeted recently. “Thanks guys!!”

Toledo’s WUPW to Lay Off 63 Employees

Toledo Fox-affiliate WUPW will reportedly lay off 63 employees when the station changes ownership this spring.

The Toledo Blade reports that Ohio state officials have been informed of planned layoffs at WUPW when a deal for the station between American Spirit Media and LIN Media is finalized in the coming months.

American Spirit, a Charlotte-based company run by Thomas Henson, who owns a handful of stations across the country, is buying WUPW from LIN for $22 million. LIN has owned and operated the station since 2002. continued…

A student who was apparently shadowing KLKN chief meteorologist Kevin Coskren for a career education class, got stuck following Coskren a little too closely.

When KLKN went to Coskren for a live weather update at the top if its 6 p.m. newscast, the kid was sitting right behind the meteorologist. Realizing that they were live, the kid slowly slides out of the frame (video above). continued…

KXAN Introduces New Morning Anchor

Austin NBC-affiliate KXAN introduced Robert Maxwell to viewers this morning, announcing that Maxwell would join the morning anchor desk on March 12.

Maxwell comes to KXAN from KTVX in Salt Lake City, where he served as the station’s primary evening anchor. In addition to co-anchoring KXAN’s morning newscast, Maxwell will work as an investigative reporter.

“I’m pleased to welcome a journalist of Robert’s caliber to the KXAN team,” KXAN news director Michael Fabac said this week. “Robert’s personality will help engage the a.m. news audience and serve as a terrific compliment to anchor Sally Hernandez.” continued…

WFSB Partnering with Local Newspaper

WFSB announced this week that it is teaming up with local newspaper the Norwich Bulletin in an effort to bring viewers more news coverage from eastern Connecticut.

“Working together, we will only strengthen our commitment to our viewers and the towns in that region,” WFSB vice president and general manager Klarn DePalma said. “Both of our staffs have a commitment to providing Norwich and neighboring communities with the best news, weather and sports coverage possible.”

The partnership, which will take effect sometime in March, will have WFSB and Bulletin staffers appearing on each other’s platforms. continued…

WBFF Adding Newscast to Crowded 5 p.m. Time Slot

Baltimore Fox-affiliate WBFF plans to add a 5 p.m. newscast to its schedule in April, entering the station into local news competition with WBAL, WJZ, and WMAR at that time slot.

The Baltimore Sun reports that WBFF’s new 5 o’clock newscast will be anchored by Jeff Barnd and Jennifer Gilbert, who currently anchor the station’s 5:30 p.m newscast.

“I’m going to change the lineup and run ‘Judge Judy’ from 4 to 5, and run the news from 5 to 5:30, and then, 5:30 to 6,” general manager Bill Fanshawe told the Sun.

Chief Meteorologist T.G. Shuck Leaving WKYT, Saying He Wants to Spend More Time with His Family

T.G. Shuck is resigning from WKYT after 11 years as the station’s chief meteorologist.

Shuck announced this week that his final day with the CBS-affiliate will be Friday, March 2nd. In total, he has spent 22 years with WKYT.

“After 22 years at WKYT, 16 of them doing weather and the last 11 years as Chief Meteorologist, the long hours and crazy schedules haven’t been easy on my wife and 3 children,” Shuck wrote in a post on his Facebook page. “This time in my girls’ young lives will never come again, so it’s especially important for me to be a part of that now.”

WKYT plans to announce Shuck’s successor during its 11 p.m. newscast tonight. continued…

Former WBBH Anchor Speaks Out About Firing on Rival Station

Longtime WBBH anchor Craig Wolf spoke to rival station WFTX this week about being fired by the NBC-affiliate last year. Wolf recently filed a lawsuit against WBBH, alleging that the station fired him in retaliation after he complained about “extremely unclean” conditions in the station’s newsroom and studio.

A WFTX news crew caught up with Wolf this week after he participated in a charity golf tournament.

“It was great to have a bunch of people come up to me and say ‘I miss you,’” Wolf told WFTX about being back in Southwest Florida. “But it’s not so great in Nashville, Tennessee where I’ve relocated, where I’m trying to find a job.” continued…

After 32 Years at WRC, Anchor Joe Krebs to Retire

Longtime WRC anchor and reporter Joe Krebs announced today that he will retire on March 30, after 32 years at the D.C. station.

“I really feel like I’ve been living my dream for almost 42 years, including the last 32 years here at Channel 4. Being a news broadcaster is what I always wanted to be,” Krebs said, announcing his retirement. “Now, I want to travel with my wife and spend more time with my kids and grandchild–soon to be grandchildren–and, quite frankly, just do whatever darn well I want to do.”

Krebs has spent the last 18 years anchoring WRC’s morning newscast, and the station has tapped Aaron Gilchrist as his a.m. successor. Gilchrist will join Eun Yang at the morning anchor desk beginning April 2. continued…

Popular New York consumer reporter Asa Aarons is joining WCBS, after spending 15 years with WNBC.

FishbowlNY reports that Aarons will start with the CBS O&O on Thursday, bringing his long-running “Ask Asa” series with him.

“All the scams that used to be done via mail or even on the street have now moved to the Internet,” Aarons told FishbowlNY recently. “I’ll be showing consumers how to make the technology work for [them], rather than against them.” Read more at FishbowlNY

In a video that’s now been posted a few times on YouTube, WJET‘s Craig Smylie appears to flub his sports update during the ABC-affiliate’s morning newscast.

“Son of a bitch,” Smylie exclaims in the video (above), shaking his head.

The gaffe likely wasn’t a case of an anchor letting a bad word slip on live TV, though. It looks like someone in the control room played the wrong taped segment during the newscast. continued…

Abruptly Fired by WADL, Kevin O’Brien Shares His Side of the Story

After his very public termination as a WADL consultant, Kevin O’Brien is firing back at the independent station and its owner Kevin Adell.

Today an attorney representing O’Brien circulated a press release defending him against the “defamatory” press release WADL sent out last week announcing his dismissal.

In firing O’Brien, WADL cited his use of company equipment to “obtain a deal with the San Jose Sharks” as the reason for his termination. O’Brien denies trying to land a deal with the NHL team, and contends that he was fired because he disagreed with Adell about how to discipline an employee for excessive use of a company vehicle. continued…

Letter Reveals WADL Fired Temporary President for Trying to Land Another Job

After firing consultant Kevin O’Brien last week, WADL issued a press release stating only that the former Meredith executive had violated “numerous corporate policies.” Now a clearer picture of O’Brien’s termination is starting to development.

NewsBlues recently obtained a copy of the letter WADL sent to O’Brien, outlining his dismissal.

Referring to O’Brien as the “temporary president of Adell Broadcasting” (WADL’s owner), the letter states that an internal investigation uncovered O’Brien “using company equipment in an effort to obtain a deal with the San Jose Sharks.” continued…
