Media General reported an operating income of $42.3 million and a net income of $17.6 million for the quarter, both significant year-over-year increases. Cable and satellite retransmission fees were up 84% to $9.9 million.

“Record political advertising was $30 million. Core local and national advertising revenues, excluding political, increased 4%,” Media General president-CEO George L. Mahoney said in a statement. “Media General was particularly well positioned to maximize political advertising opportunities, with six of our stations located in four of the key battleground states.”

“One of the challenges of live television is that the unexpected can and does happen,” Skip Valet vice president and general manager of WKMG told TVSpy. “We are continually assessing how to best balance our reporting when confronted with these types of interruptions.”

The situation begs the question is there a line that shouldn’t be crossed when dealing with intrusions during live reports? Police were lead to Vercoe, who is on parole, after a neighbor complained of excessive foot and vehicle traffic coming from an apartment located in an alley. In the apartment, they found a SONY camera and a half a gram of heroin. Vercoe is currently wanted for being in possession of a controlled substance and possession of stolen property.

Sunday, KIEM reported four news cameras and a scanner had been stolen from a trailer behind the station.  The Humboldt County Sheriff’s office is asking the public to be on the lookout for what is now two SONY cameras and one Panasonic camera along with a Radio Shack scanner.

She was shooting video of downed power lines at the intersection of East Morehead Street and Kenilworth Avenue. Two vehicles collided at the intersection and careened out of control. One of the cars hit Caroline.

She was taken to Carolinas Medical Center where she is stable.

Vandergriff joined the station last month from WILX in Lansing.

“We’re doing MOVIES! because this content works in the D2 space,” said Frank Cicha senior vice president of programming for FOX television stations. “Weigel has proven that in their other ventures, which is why we’ve chosen to work with them.  While we’ve successfully used our D2 spectrum to some degree, this is the first time we’re going in with all stations on board, which is exciting.”

WGCL investigative reporter Jeff Chirico was punched in the chin and knocked to the ground while reporting a piece for the Atlanta CBS affiliate.

Chirico’s was investigating Richard Wilder, who reportedly began operating a business in Gainesville just weeks after he was charged with seven counts of theft by deception and once count of racketeering. While reporting the story, Donald Wilder, presumed to be Richard’s father, approached Chirico and threatened him, punching him in the face and knocking him to the ground.

WGCL says Chirico was not seriously injured. His full report airs tonight on WGCL’s 11 p.m. newscast.

Hersch joined WKOW in 2009 as an anchor and reporter and moved to the sports department in 2011. Most recently, she has been the station’s weekend sports anchor and reporter.

At Fox Sports North, she will cover the Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Wild and University of Minnesota hockey. Her first day will be February 17.

The new show will air from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. and according to Arkansas Business Daily will be anchored by Deedra Wilson and Greg Dee.

The Nexstar run FOX affiliate is also making changes to its evening lineup by eliminating the 5:00 and 10:00 p.m. news shows and replacing them with a half hour show at 5:30 and an hour show at 9:00 p.m.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Conners has been out of action after a second rotator cuff surgery. He posted the slow progress of his recovery on facebook last week saying,

The shooting started around 10:30 a.m. when police say a man described as a white male in his 60s opened fire inside a building near 16th street and Glendale avenue in Phoenix.

FOX owned KSAZ broke the story first, but stayed on air the shortest amount of time initially.  The station started with Ron Hoon in the studio at 10:58 a.m. then went to a helicopter shot with Hoon giving an update of the situation and a “we’ll have more for you in one hour” before rejoining regular programming. continued…

At least one person is dead after a tornado touched down in Adairsville, Ga., Wednesday afternoon. Footage of the tornado was captured by WSB reporter Ross Cavitt, who had just arrived on the scene and was reporting from about a quarter mile away (video above).

All four Atlanta stations — ABC affiliate WSB, CBS affiliate WGCL, NBC affiliate WXIA and Fox O&O WAGA — have been in continuing coverage of the severe weather for several hours. The area remains under a severe thunderstorm warning. [via CNN]

The layoffs come less than a month after Mission Broadcasting completed the purchase of FOX affiliate KLRT from Newport Television. Soon after the deal went through, Nexstar, who signed an outside services agreement with Mission, removed the station’s GM and promised more changes to come.

Arkansas Business quotes a KLRT insider who said at least 20 of the layoffs came from KLRT, including news director Ed Trauschke and sports anchor David Raath.  Another source said KARK, the Little Rock NBC affiliate, saw eight employees let go including on-air talent Wendy Suares, Adam Rodriguez and Jonathan Athens.

A Nexstar spokesperson told TVSpy the company does not comment on personnel matters.
