Heidi Jones Case Takes Unexpected Turn

The strange case of former WABC weathercaster Heidi Jones, who has been charged with lying to police about an attempted sexual assault, took an unusual turn last week as prosecutors moved towards an indictment in the case.

According to the Daily News, the case was presented to a grand jury who returned an indictment, something rarely done for lower level crimes.

Jones’s attorney tells FishbowlNY that he is surprised that such aggressive measures have been taken in the case and says that he is seeking to have the indictment thrown out. “I most assuredly know what the decision to indict Heidi Jones means: It means that there appears to be a double standard for the prosecution of misdemeanors in New York County,” Jones’s attorney Paul Callan said. “The double standard is an unconstitutional disgrace. I will move to dismiss the indictment immediately.”

Jones, who admitted in December that she had repeatedly lied to police about narrowly escaping an assailant in Central Park, is set to be arraigned on the indictment on June 29th.
