Investigative Reporter M.L. Elrick Joining WJBK

Pulitzer Prize-winning Detroit Free Press reporter M.L. Elrick is leaving the newspaper to join Detroit Fox O&O WJBK as an investigative reporter.

“Elrick’s passion for exposing wrongdoing and standing up for our community fits perfectly with FOX 2’s problem solver team mantra,” WJBK vice president and news director Dana Hahn said, announcing the hiring.  “His experience, knowledge, and passion for Detroit will enhance our already powerful investigative unit.”

Elrick shared a 2009 Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick‘s series of scandals.

This won’t be Elrick’s first time working in TV news.  In 2006, he did a yearlong stint as an investigative reporter at WDIV, Detroit’s NBC-affiliate.

Elrick started at the Detroit Free Press in 1999 and returned to the newspaper following his run at WDIV.

“[WJBK] has the right edge to it. Like me, they prefer to be hunters rather than gatherers,” Elrick told Crain’s Detroit. “After so many years at any one place, I get antsy and this is a new challenge.”

Elrick’s first day is set for August 13th.

Here’s a video of Elrick talking about his brand of watchdog reporting…
