KABC Reporting Leads ABC News to Back Away From Tony Scott Report

ABC News is backing off a report about the suicide of director Tony Scott after one of its O&Os reported conflicting details about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Yesterday, ABC News reported Scott, who jumped off a bridge in Los Angeles Harbor, had inoperable brain cancer. ABC has now retreated from that statement after additional reporting from Los Angeles ABC O&O KABC:

The family of director Tony Scott, who died Sunday after jumping off a Los Angeles bridge, was not aware Scott had cancer, Los Angeles County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter told ABC News station KABC in Los Angeles.

ABC News was unable to reach Scott’s family to confirm the assistant chief coroner’s statement.

Scott’s family also disputes the report. The LA coroner’s office is not expected to release autopsy results or details surround his death for weeks. Scott was the director of “Top Gun” and “True Romance,” among other films.
