Phoenix Meteorologist Wins 47K for Charity

Amber Sullins, chief meteorologist for Phoenix ABC affiliate KNXV, correctly guessed what America was thinking and won $47,000 for Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Sullins won big by facing off against four fellow meteorologists on the game show, “Let’s Ask America.”  Competing against Sullins were Mark Johnson, chief meteorologist for Cleveland ABC affiliate WEWS, George Flickinger, meteorologist for Tulsa NBC affiliate KJRH and Gary Lezak, chief meteorologist for Kansas City NBC affiliate KSHB. All were playing for charity.

“Let’s Ask America” is a televised game show where four contestants compete over Skype.  The contestants must predict how Americans answered questions like, “What did commuters say is the most difficult type of weather to drive in?” The show is produced by Scripps and Warner Bros. Telepictures.

Sullins told TVSpy, “Just skyping with four people was totally cool. I’d never experience anything like that and then the show itself was a lot of fun. It’s not like one of those stuffy game shows.”

The Phoenix meteorologist missed one question during the show, but said she was pretty confident going in to the game. The question that sealed the deal for Sullins was: What did TV viewers say television news programs could use more of? The answer? Unbiased reporters.

“It’s not like jeopardy where you get it right or wrong,” Sullins said. “You have to decide what you think other people said.  So I felt like I was pretty confident in being able to do that.”

She said she chose Phoenix Children’s Hospital as her charity because of a story she did on a family whose daughter suffered from a rare skin condition. “I think  meeting those people and getting to know those families through what we’ve done at the station here, it brought it a little closer to home for me.”
