Reporting on the Red Sox Collapse, Boston Stations Feel City’s Pain

Boston stations spent significant time this morning reporting on the Boston Red Sox, who were shut out of the postseason last night in a late-inning loss that completed a painful September slide, leaving sports-obsessed Boston in mourning.

“Red Sox fans waking up with broken hearts and massive headaches as hopes of the postseason are long gone,” WFXT anchor Gene Lavanchy said soberly at the top of the 6:30 a.m. broadcast.

WBZ‘s David Robichaud and WCVB‘s Kelly Tuthill (who described her live shot as “like the weather — it’s dreary, it’s damp, it’s miserable”) were at Fenway Park to cover the team’s arrival in Boston. “I have a feeling not many of them will want to speak,” Robichaud said shortly before the Red Sox pulled in.

And on WHDH, the NBC-affiliate, Ann Curry — who chatted about the weather during the “Today” show tease — told morning anchors Anne Allred and Adam Williams they sounded “like they need a hug.”

“We expect a rainy day,” Curry said.”We’re going to get our raincoats to go outside.”

“It’s probably Red Sox tears,” Allred responded.
