NBC News President Apologizes to Affiliates After ‘Today’ Skips 9/11 Moment of Silence

NBC News president Steve Capus has issued an apology to the network’s affiliated stations after the “Today” show aired a segment with “Keeping up with the Kardashians” star Kris Jenner instead of the 9/11 moment of silence on Tuesday. The New York Times’ Bill Carter has details:

Mr. Capus sent his memo to NBC Affiliate Corporation Group executives, and began by citing the extensive coverage “Today” provided Wednesday to the attacks on the American embassies in Libya and Egypt. Then he added: “Yesterday, we made an editorial call resulting in the Sept, 11 moment of silence not being seen. While we dedicated a substantial amount of airtime to anniversary events, we still touched a nerve with many of your viewers … and for that we apologize.”

Carter also notes that NBC has no plans to apologize for the decision. continued…

First on Scene: WNEP Anchor Remembers Flight 93

WNEP anchor Jon Meyer remembered being the first reporter on the scene of the crash of Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. Speaking this weekend at a memorial service at the Shanksville, PA field where the plane went down, the anchor for the ABC affiliate in Scranton, shared his memories of that day with a large crowd that included victims’ families, according to the Citizens’ Voice.

”My first words were, ‘The only way to describe this scene is haunting,’” Meyer recalled Monday. “I could hear it in my voice all these years later, knowing I stood right next to where so many people died.”

Meyer said, at the time he was a 24-year old reporter working for WJAC in Johnstown.
