ABC Announces All of Its Owned Stations Now Using Rentrak

ABC_304All of ABC’s Owned Television Stations are using Rentrak’s Advanced Demographics ratings info.

The station group announced WABC in New York, KABC in Los Angeles, WLS in Chicago, WPVI in Philadelphia and WTVD in Raleigh-Durham have joined KGO in San Francisco, KTRK in Houston and KFSN in Fresno in using the audience measurement system.

“We believe in providing our advertisers and agencies with the most accurate level of measurement,” Rebecca Campbell, president of the ABC Owned Television Stations Group said in a statement. “We have confidence that Rentrak’s larger sample sizes, along with its automotive and political data, provide us with the information we need.”

Head of National Sales for ABC Owned Stations to Retire

ABC_304John Watkins, president of ABC Owned Television Stations National Television Sales has announced he’s retiring at the end of January 2014.

“John has built our National TV Sales Group into one that is recognized as the best in the business,” Rebecca Campbell, president of the ABC Owned Television Stations said in a statement. “And although we are all sorry to see him go, we have been so fortunate to have John in this role for the past 27 years and with our company for more than four decades.”

Watkins has been president of National TV Sales since 1986. He started with ABC in 1972. Before being named to his current position, Watkins was the GSM for WABC in New York.

He has also worked as an account executive and local sales manager for WLS in Chicago, an account executive for ABC Spot Sales in Los Angeles and New York, director of research for Spot Sales in Chicago and research analyst for ABC Spot Sales in New York.

‘We Are the First Responders’: Station Group Heads Discuss Health of Local TV

NATPE_ConferenceTVSpy sat in on two of the TV Summit panel discussions at the “NYC TV Week” event this afternoon.

While the panel with Peter Liguori, president and CEO of Tribune Company, was held earlier than the lunchtime discussion with Valari Staab, president of NBC owned stations and Rebecca Campbell, president of ABC owned stations, much of the discussion revolved around the health of local stations.

“I actually had someone approach me who said ‘No one watches local news,’” said Liguori. “And they actually couldn’t be more wrong. This morning in LA, KTLA drew about 150,000 viewers. CNN probably drew 10,000. We’re so accustomed and trained to look at cable news on a national basis and never on a local basis. KTLA out delivered CNN ten times this morning. That’s incredibly powerful.” Read more
