Support Growing for Fired Rookie Anchor A.J. Clemente

The now famous KFYR anchor, A.J. Clemente, who was fired on his first day on-air when his first words were “fucking shit,” might find his career still has some life in it after all.

After the Bismarck, ND NBC affiliate posted an apology for Clemente’s outburst on its facebook page, a majority of commenters asked the station not to fire him. One wrote, “I think we’re all adults and are quite capable of getting over it. It’s a non-issue.” While another said, “This kid is probably torturing himself over what happened. Go easy on him, as we all make mistakes.”

Clemente was also a hot topic on the network morning news show circuit, which seemed to see the funnier side of the profanity issue.

On NBC’s “Today” show, Matt Lauer asked the assembled anchor team if Clemente should be given a second chance. Ryan Seacrest, who was on set said, “I think we could relate to possibly being in a situation close to this. So, maybe he deserves a second chance.” Al Roker, who told mediabistroTV in February his philosophy is “don’t be a jerk” and credited his first big break to a similar situation, agreed saying, “I think he should (get a second chance). You know, (he’s) a young guy. Obviously, he didn’t mean anything by it. It was an accident.” continued…

Al Roker: My First Big Break

Before he was everyone’s favorite forecaster on NBC’s “Today” Show, Al Roker paid his dues on the local TV circuit. Now he has his own show “Wake Up with Al” on The Weather Channel, owns his own production company “Al Roker Entertainment,” has co-authored three mystery novels, written a couple of cookbooks, and a has penned a couple of New York Times Bestsellers.

So how did Roker go from being a flannel shirt and overall wearing student at SUNY Oswego to media kingpin? Al said his first big break came from being in the right place at the right time when someone said the wrong thing at the wrong time.

In Chicago, Al Roker Praises Fellow Weatherman WGN’s Tom Skilling

In chilly Chicago this morning, TVSpy caught up with Al Roker between his “Today” show weather reports. In addition to talking about this and that (we’ll post those stories on TVNewser later) we asked the 35-year NBC News veteran about longtime Windy City weatherman Tom Skilling. A few months ago the WGN meteorologist re-upped signing a whopping 10-year contract.

Roker says Skilling’s enduring presence – he’s been at WGN for more than three decades – is a real testament to the local legend. “People can get weather online, or on their phone, you can get weather any time you want. But [viewers] trust him, they believe him.”

London 2012: For NBC Affiliates, Olympics Coverage Means Life In The ‘Hollywood Squares’ Set

Just next door to the set of NBC’s “Today,” in the northeastern part of Olympic Park in East London, an unusual building rises up four stories over reclaimed marshland. It is the home of the NBC affiliates for the duration of the Olympic games.

NBC affiliates from across the country, as well as shows like The Weather Channel’s “Wake Up With Al” originate from the temporary structure, which Al Roker jokingly refers to as a “tower of babble.”

“[It's]what I call ‘The Hollywood Squares,’ it is like nine broadcast booths,” Roker said from the NBC morning show’s set a few dozen yards away. “There is another six [booths] that are really nice, air conditioned, with windows, toilets and all that, ours are basically, well, it is a tent camp,” he added jokingly.

The structure (see the photo below) gives the affiliates a stellar view of the Olympic stadium behind them, and the boxed structure allows for multiple stations to be on the air at the same time.

The colorful affiliates "Hollywood Squares" box, center. The 'Today' Set Can be seen in the left side of the photo Credit: Alex Weprin

Of course, the tight quarters aren’t always conducive to multiple live shots, even if everyone has their own “square”:

In Her Final Newscast, Sue Simmons Makes It Clear She Doesn’t Want to Leave

Throughout her final newscast on WNBC, legendary New York anchor Sue Simmons made it clear that she didn’t want to leave.

Following a day of video tributes to her, the moment finally came Friday night: Simmons would anchor her last newscast at WNBC, ending a 32-year run at NBC’s flagship station. And she did it with the same humor and unpredictability that have endeared her to so many viewers.

At times during the 11 p.m. newscast, Chuck Scarborough, Simmons’s longtime co-anchor, whose dapper outfit for the occasion was punctuated with a bright pink pocket square, looked like a nervous parent teaching his kid to drive–he was ready to grab the wheel when it appeared that Simmons may veer the newscast in a regrettable direction. continued…

Following KNBC Weathercaster’s ‘Kook’ Comment, Al Roker Makes L.A. His ‘Pick City’

After KNBC morning weathercaster Elita Loresca was caught on-air calling Al Roker a “kook” last Friday, it was only fitting that “Today” would make Los Angeles its “Pick City” during Roker’s forecast this morning.

Loresca’s “kook” comment was played up by TMZ but she and Roker quickly dismissed the incident. On Twitter, Roker wrote, “She was joking. And some mornings I am kooky. No big whoop.”

Although Roker didn’t mention the “kook” comment during his “Pick City” bit, it can be seen as a subtle nod to Loresca. And, following a technical flub with the segment this morning (intro music played and a map appeared at the top of Roker’s weather report but he didn’t end up introducing L.A. until the very end), Roker certainly acted kooky.

“You nailed that Pick City,” Wille Geist said dryly.

Al Roker Reports Honolulu NBC-Affiliate Was ‘Knocked Off Air’: Uh, Not True

Al Roker made a dramatic announcement this morning on “Today”: NBC’s affiliate in Honolulu had “been knocked off air.”

The only problem was that KHNL, along with its sister station KGMB, was still very much on the air. Without any interruption.

KHNL went into extended breaking news mode throughout the night and into the morning as the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center announced that a tsunami, stemming from the earthquake off the coast of Japan, could hit the islands of Hawaii in the early hours of Friday morning.

TVSpy confirmed with KHNL that they were never knocked off the air this morning so what happened on “Today”? It turns out that Roker had misunderstood notes that had been handed to him, a spokesperson for “Today” told TVSpy.

Roker’s flub was especially odd considering that it came right after “Today” ran video of a placid Hawaiian shoreline.

In Orlando, You Can Go Home Again

Most of those big network TV anchors and correspondents got their start in local TV news. And several of them dropped anchor in Orlando. So the Orlando Sentinel‘s TV critic Hal Boedeker <a href="http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/os-orlando-tv-alumni-20101229,0,5693713,full.story"target="_blank">caught up with some of them, including Byron Pitts (now at CBS News), Deborah Roberts (now at ABC News and married to NBC’s Al Roker) and Jessica Yellin (now at CNN.) Trace Gallagher, now at FOX News, then at Channel 6 (then WCPX, now WKMG), talks about his time in Orlando: “Shepard Smith was a huge influence. I got here in August 1993. The overlap was four months.
