WMAQ Launches 11 a.m. Newscast, Shuffles Meteorologists

byron mirandaWMAQ, the NBC-owned station in Chicago, is making changes to its morning programming. Beginning September 8, the station will debut an hourlong 11 a.m. newscast that will replace the current half-hour noon newscast.

“A lot of news breaks during the day. Our expanded news at 11 am will allow us to even better serve our viewers with the latest news and weather information,” WMAQ vice president of news and station manager Frank Whittaker said in a statement.

Anchoring the 11 a.m. newscast will be Stefan Holt and Marion Brooks, alongside meteorologist Byron Miranda (pictured), who returns to WMAQ after more than a decade away. Most recently, he has worked as the weekend evening meteorologist at KNBC, the NBC-owned station in Los Angeles.

Cheryl Scott and Alicia Roman Join Chicago’s WMAQ

NBC owned-and-operated WMAQ in Chicago has added two meteorologists to the weather team: Cheryl Scott (pictured, right) and Alicia Roman.

Scott, who is currently a meteorologist at WBIR in Knoxville, will be WMAQ’s weekend meteorologist. She will replace Ginger Zee, who is leaving the station in October, reportedly to join ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Roman will join the station as the meteorologist for the newly-launched noon newscast. She comes to WMAQ from WISH in Indianapolis.

With the addition of Scott and Roman, WMAQ’s weather team will expand to five people, including current meteorologists Brant Miller, Andy Avalos and Pete Sack. “We are committed to providing our viewers across all platforms the most comprehensive weather coverage in Chicago,” station president and general manager Larry Wert said in a statement.
