Lexington’s WKYT Launches 4 p.m. Newscast

Lexington CBS affiliate WKYT is launching an hour-long 4 p.m. newscast, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader giving the market two newscasts at 4pm.

The newscast takes the place of Anderson Cooper‘s syndicated daytime talk show, which will end its 2-year run in a few months. When the newscast launches, Cooper will be moved to WKYT’s subchannel through the summer.

“There’s no greater lead-in to local news than local news,” WKYT news director Robert Thomas told the Herald-Leader. “That’s why it was a smart decision for us.”

DeAnn Stephens, (above) is returning to the station to report for the newscast. Two additional employees will also be hired.

As if he’s not going to be getting enough lobbying during the convention, Anderson Cooper was put on the spot by WCCB‘s FOX News Rising co-host and staff meteorologist Derek James.

CBS Set to Launch New Morning Show in New York

CBS is set to launch a new morning show on WLNY, the Long Island, NY-based station that the company acquired in April.

The new show, titled “Live From the Couch,” will air weekdays form 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. and feature a mix of news, talk, lifestyle, and entertainment segments.

“Live From the Couch” will be hosted by John Elliott and Lisa Kerney, who currently work WCBS‘s morning newscast, and Carolina Bermudez, who will join the show following a seven-year run as co-host of the New York radio show “Elvis Duran and the Morning Show.” continued…

WCBS Hires Former ‘Anderson’ Producer Diana Miller

There is a new executive producer at WCBS in New York City: Diana Miller. Miller joins the CBS O&O from Anderson Cooper’s syndicated talk show, where she was a producer. Our sister site, FishbowlNY, has more details:

Miller’s affiliation with Cooper started at CNN, where she spent seven years on Anderson Cooper 360. She began as a production assistant, ultimately becoming a producer.

KTTV Names Jeff Michael Anchor of 5 p.m. Newscast

KTTV‘s brand-new 5 p.m. newscast, slated to launch next Monday on the Fox owned-and-operated station in Los Angeles, officially has an anchor: veteran KTTV personality Jeff Michael (pictured, left).

Michael has been with KTTV as a reporter and weekend anchor since 1998. He will be joined on the 5 p.m. broadcast — which news director Kingsley Smith has made a top priority — by reporters Liz Habib and Ed Laskos, as well as entertainment anchor Lisa Breckenridge.

The hour-long broadcast, which will feature opinions and analysis on local issues, will follow Anderson Cooper‘s syndicated daytime talk show “Anderson,” which also debuts next week. Chris Lemire, a former Fox News Channel producer, will be the newscast’s executive producer.

Anderson Cooper Calls Out WXMI Reporter for His Giggle Fit

Following his giggle fit on Wednesday’s “360,” Anderson Cooper added himself to the show’s RidicuList last night. And pointed out that he’s certainly not the first person to break down in laughter on live TV.

WKYT Plans to Add Half-Hour Newscast at 10 a.m.

WKYT will become the first station in the Lexington, KY market to have a 10 a.m. newscast beginning September 12.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that station management at WKYT, which is the market’s CBS affiliate, has been planning the additional newscast for two years, since Oprah Winfrey announced she would depart from daytime television. Several stations have chosen to fill the Oprah timeslot with news, but WKYT — which will replace the daytime queen with Anderson Cooper‘s syndicated show this fall — wanted another timeslot for an additional newscast.

“We do very well at noon, and we’ve constantly improved in show growth in the mornings, so we’re wanting to bridge those time periods,” news director Robert Thomas told the Herald-Leder.

The new show will be staffed by the midday news team: anchors Bill Bryant and Barbara Bailey and meteorologist Todd Borek. The station will slide “Regis & Kelly” from the 10 a.m. hour to the 9 a.m. hour to accommodate the half-hour newscast.

Anchor Derek James Accuses Anderson Cooper of Ripping Off WCCB Segment

WCCB morning anchor Derek James is calling out Anderson Cooper for seemingly ripping off a regular segment that James did back in January (video above–begins around 1-minute mark).

Both James and Cooper share an apparent respect for the collected works of author Nicole Polizzi (aka Snooki). James expressed his admiration for Snooki at the beginning of this year in a series of segments that look a lot like one that Cooper did recently.

Brand-New KTTV News Director Announces Launch of 5 p.m. Newscast

Kingsley Smith began his tenure as KTTV news director with a big announcement. On his first day with the station this week, Smith announced that the Fox O&O would be launching a 5 p.m. newscast in the fall.

Earlier this month, KTTV announced that Smith, who had spent the last three and a half years leading the newsroom at Fox’s WTXF, would be replacing Jose Rios as news director.

A Fox spokesperson tells TVSpy that the new 5 p.m. newscast, which will move into the time slot currently held by “Dr. Oz” when that show leaves for KABC, has been in the works for a bit now but that Smith is making it a top priority.

The 1-hour newscast is set to make its debut on September 12th and will follow Anderson Cooper‘s new syndicated show in the lineup. The station is still working out who will appear at the anchor desk.

Warner Bros.’ ‘Anderson’ Selling Fast with Over 80 Stations Already Signed

Anderson Cooper has been a hot item on the syndication market. With a flurry of deal-making in December, the Warner Bros. show “Anderson” is set to close out the year with commitments from at least 80 stations.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. doubled the amount of cleared stations in the past 10 days, making “Anderson” a definite Go and possibly signaling the first syndication hit in the post-Oprah landscape.

Warner Bros. announced in September that they had signed a deal with Cooper to produce a one-hour daytime strip that would debut in Fall 2011. In making the announcement, Warner Bros. was confident that they had the right talent to capitalize on the programming hole left by Oprah. continued…
