How ‘Dateline’ Correspondent Andrea Canning Scored WNBC A Shooting Suspect Exclusive

CanningVideoOn Thursday, WNBC’s 5 PM newscast aired exclusive video of Brett Knight, who is accused of shooting and killing a man that he was staying with in Long Island. The video was of Knight in handcuffs boarding an airplane in Atlanta, and then of him sitting in his seat on the plane, answering (or more accurately not answering) questions.

You can watch the video in question here.

As it happens, the “scoop” was secured by some good luck. NBC News “Dateline” correspondent Andrea Canning was in Atlanta working on a story for the newsmagazine, and was at the airport to return to New York. She noticed a man with a sweatshirt over his hands, and three other men in dark suits walking with him. After asking around, she confirmed that he was the man suspected in the Long Island killing, and pulled out her iPhone to take some video.

Canning was on the same flight, and was coincidentally assigned to sit right in front of Knight, where she tried to get him to answer some questions. Once the plane landed in New York, she sent the video to WNBC in time for the 5 PM newscast.

WFTV Touts Exclusive Casey Anthony Spotting

“Only WFTV was there to capture who was believed to be Casey running into a building, covering her head with a blanket,” the Orlando ABC-affiliate exclaimed on Tuesday, posting raw aerial video of a woman believed to be Casey Anthony running from a single-engine passenger plane to a building at the Orlando Executive Airport.

WFTV’s Steve Barrett reported live at the airport this morning, saying that either Anthony “was really getting off that plane when we videotaped this yesterday or the plane’s now being used in an elaborate deception.”

After her release early Sunday morning, Anthony boarded a plane owned by her former attorney Todd Macaluso. Macaluso’s plane returned to the Orlando Executive Airport on Tuesday and video of a woman wearing similar clothes to what Anthony wore when she was released from jail was captured by WFTV’s news helicopter.
