WMC’s Dave Brown Will Cut Hours, as Ron Childers Steps Up

Brown ChildersMemphis NBC affiliate WMC has begun the process of building a weather department that is not led by chief meteorologist Dave Brown. The 37-year-veteran announced Wednesday he would scale back his hours, and appear exclusively on the 6 p.m. news, starting in September:

“I have asked for a reduced schedule at WMC Action News 5,” he explained. “I am not retiring, but feel this is the proper time to begin a transition to fewer hours in the workplace. I have worked since the age of 10. I have enjoyed a 52 year career in broadcasting, including 37 years so far here at WMC. For many of those years I have worked a six-day week and have worked nights since 1973.”

He continued, “I have been blessed with the support of my employers, my co-workers and my family. I am also grateful for the tremendous support I have received from our viewers. Many of those viewers have asked me not to retire, so this is a compromise that will give me more time to enjoy activities that I have not been able to do. I am in good health and look forward to enjoying entertainment and sports events and to traveling more. I want to emphasize that this is completely at my request, and thank WMC for indulging me as I continue my career in this reduced schedule.”

The station has named Ron Childers managing meteorologist. He will anchor the 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts. Childers has worked mornings in Memphis for 25 years.

Ahem, “So watch the video and laugh or maybe just cry, because springtime is here even on TVSpy.”

Tulsa Meteorologist Reworks Classic Holiday Poem for Forecast

Tulsa’s Andrew Kozak got into the holiday spirit by reciting his version of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” for his morning forecast.

The meteorologist for ABC affiliate KTUL started with a rhyming look back at the year that was, then transitioned the doggerel poem to the local forecast that included the line, “But no big storms are brewing, so there’s no need to cower. On Sunday just a 20 percent chance of a shower.”

KTUL Meteorologist Draws Weather Maps After Graphics Malfunction

A graphics malfunction at Tulsa ABC affiliate KTUL forced meteorologist Andrew Kozak to get creative with his weather forecast Monday (video above).

Kozak did the entire weather report with hand-drawn graphics, including maps, headlines and a “radar.” The graphics were up and running again for the second half of the morning newscast.

On the Heels of Frank Mitchell’s Retirement, KTUL Shakes Up Weather Team

On Frank Mitchell‘s last day as chief meteorologist, KTUL has announced some changes to its team of weathercasters.

Andrew Kozak (pictured left), who has been freelancing for the Tulsa ABC affiliate, has been named KTUL’s morning meteorologist. He replaces Mike Collier (pictured right), who is moving to weekend evenings.

“It’s time to throw away the alarm clock,” Collier wrote on Facebook. “You are in great hands with Meteorologist Andrew Kozak!”

No word yet on how the new schedule will affect Jennifer Zeppelin, who is the current weekend evening meteorologist. In a statement, KTUL said a new chief meteorologist “will be named later this month.” The station has yet to respond to TVSpy’s request for comment.
