Former WFLD Anchor Anna Davlantes Returns, on the Radio

Screen Shot 2014-09-29 at 9.52.36 AMAnna Davlantes, who left Fox-owned WFLD in Chicago last October, is joining the radio news team at Chicago’s WGN AM. As the Chicago Tribune reports, the station is beefing up its staff to compete with rival news station WBBM:

Davlantes talked about the new role with Chicago media reporter Robert Feder:

“They understand that I have contacts and sources in the community, and I’m going to use those to try to uncover the stories that people aren’t covering,” Davlantes says. “They’re playing to my strengths.”

After leaving Fox-owned WFLD-Channel 32 in October 2013, Davlantes fielded offers for television jobs, but all were out of town. “I made the decision to stay in Chicago,” she says.

WFLD Moving Corey McPherrin to Noon News

mcpherrinTVSpy has learned Corey McPherrin will be moving from anchor of “Good Day Chicago” to solo anchor of the Noon show for Chicago FOX owned station WFLD.

The move is supposed to take place in December with McPherrin also reporting for the station’s 9:00 p.m. newscast.

WFLD has seen some recent changes to its morning show. Last week, Anna Davlantes announced she was leaving the station and a couple of days later a new morning team was announced with Melody Mendez joining the station from Denver’s KDVR and Jon Kelley coming from KNTV in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Dawn Hasbrouk will also move form the Noon news to anchoring the 9:00 p.m. news with Jeff Herndon.

Anna Davlantes Leaving Chicago FOX Station

daviantes_cropped“Good Day Chicago” anchor Anna Davlantes is leaving the Chicago FOX owned station WFLD.

“I’ve decided to leave FOX after four years,” Davlantes said in a statement. “I’m grateful to management for the opportunities I’ve had at the station and will have an announcement about my new position very soon.”

Davlantes came to WFLD from NBC owned WMAQ in Chicago. She’s also worked at KRIV in Houston.

“Anna’s a long-standing member of the Chicago journalism community and has made significant contributions to our station,” said WFLD vice president and general manager Dennis Welsh. “It’s been a pleasure to have her on our team and I’d like to wish her every success in her new position.”

Her last day on-air will be Friday, November 8.

WFLD Shuffles Anchors on Weekend, Noon Newscasts

WFLD, the Fox O&O in Chicago, is making changes to its weekday and weekend newscasts.

Amara Walker, who has been freelancing for the station, has been named co-anchor of the weekend evening newscasts beginning October 6. Walker joins Larry Yellen, who previously anchored solo.

General assignment reporter Darlene Hill (pictured) also gets a promotion at WFLD. Beginning October 7, Hill joins Mike Flannery as co-host of “Fox Chicago Sunday.” Dane Placko will step away from the political affairs program to expand his investigative reporting and contribute to the weekday newscasts.

“Darlene’s years of experience reporting from Chicago neighborhoods, courthouses, and institutions give her a wealth of knowledge that complement Mike’s political expertise,” news director Phyllis Schwartz told TVSpy in a statement. Read more

A New Anchor Team on WFLD’s Noon Newscast?

Time Out Chicago’s Robert Feder has details on some upcoming changes at WFLD, the Fox O&O in Chicago, following Jan Jeffcoat‘s departure last month.

Anna Davlantes and Kori Chambers are expected to co-anchor a revamped noon newscast, which will kick off sometime next month. Davlantes currently anchors from 7 to 10 a.m., while Chambers currently anchors from 4:30 to 7 a.m. Feder reports that the pair are also “in line” to anchor a 5 p.m. weekday newscast that’s being considered for launch next year.

Patrick Elwood, who has anchored the noon newscast solo since Jeffcoat’s departure, is expected to return to full-time reporting duties.

Anna Davlantes Settles $69,000 Tab for Wedding

After eloping to Paris last spring, WFLD morning anchor Anna Davlantes and her new husband, Chicago entrepreneur David Gamperl, threw a wedding reception in early June at Carmichael’s in Chicago. About 300 of the couple’s closest friends sipped mango margaritas and dined on slow-roasted prime rib. One problem: the restaurant claims the payment for the party, which was to be taken care of by a relative of Davlantes, was never received.

Davlantes paid Carmichael’s in full on Friday after being notified that the restaurant had filed a lawsuit seeking the money from the couple. “This is the first I’ve heard there was a problem,” Davlantes told The Chicago Tribune. She said that she had never been contacted by the restaurant and was unaware that two previous checks written for the tab by a relative had not cleared. The restaurant admits they had never spoken directly to Davlantes about the outstanding balance, saying they had dealt with her husband instead.

A bank confirmed Friday afternoon that Davlantes had sufficient funds to cover the hefty check. An attorney for the restaurant said that Carmichael’s considers the matter resolved and will drop the lawsuit.

Revamping ‘Good Day Chicago,’ WFLD Begins Work on New Set, Tries Radio Simulcast

It was a busy day at Chicago’s WFLD on Thursday. As 10 technicians were notified that their positions were being eliminated, the Fox O&O started work on a brand-new studio space that is set to be completed this summer.

The new set, which will have an open look allowing anchors and reporters to roam throughout the WFLD newsroom, is part of the station’s effort to revamp its “Good Day Chicago” morning show, currently anchored by Kori Chambers and Dawn Hasbrouck in the early morning and Anna Davlantes and Corey McPherrin from 7-10 a.m.

On Thursday, “Good Day Chicago” tried out a simulcast with WTMX-FM‘s popular morning program “Eric and Kathy,” and sources say that this could become a regular feature of the show as WFLD tries to lure local viewers away from the network morning shows.

During the simulcast (video after the jump), WTMX Eric and Kathy grilled Davlantes on her recent decision to get eloped.

“If you don’t adapt in this business, you die,” one source at WFLD told TVSpy about the planned changes. Read more
