Sinclair Launches Original Programming Division

sinclair_304Sinclair Broadcast Group is going to start producing original programming.

The station group announced it’s launching the SOP, or Sinclair Original Programming division which will create and develop entertainment content as well as infomercials and direct response commercials. Sinclair said the content will initially be developed for its CW and MyTV affiliates and will run during prime time and weekend afternoons.

The division will be led by Arthur Hasson who is being named COO of Sinclair Original Programming. Hasson will continue to work as GM of WHP, Sinclair’s Harrisburg, PA, CBS and MyNet affiliate and CW affiliate WLYH.

By developing original content in connection with talented program producers, we can provide cost effective, flexible projects that can be readily monetized,” Hasson said in a statement. “In addition, we believe there is potential to distribute shows beyond our platforms both domestically and internationally. From the creative side, our large footprint of stations allows us to test concepts and talent efficiently.”

After Arrest in Prostitution Sting, David Baer Out at WHP

TVSpy has confirmed David Baer is no longer working at Harrisburg, PA, CBS affiliate WHP. The Sentinel reports the news director was apparently fired after his arrest for allegedly soliciting prostitution in June.

The Sentinel said Baer has been charged with patronizing prostitutes and is awaiting a preliminary hearing in August. He was one of three people arrested in a prostitution sting at a local hotel in in June.

Baer was hired as news director in April. Before coming to WHP, he worked at WXXA in Albany, NY. He has also worked in Springfield, MA, Indianapolis, IN, Raleigh, NC, Providence, RI, Portland, ME, and Buffalo, NY.

We have reached out to WHP general manager Arthur Hasson for comment. We will update when we hear back.

WHP News Director David Baer Arrested in Prostitution Sting, Former Reporter Says

WHP news director David Baer was arrested for allegedly soliciting prostitution, former WHP reporter Kirk Wilson confirms to the Patriot News.

Baer, 63, was one of three arrested in a prostitution sting in Swatara Township, Penn., Thursday night. Two women were also arrested on prostitution charges in an “ongoing investigation” led by Swatara Township police and agents from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Human Trafficking Taskforce, according to the Patriot News.

Wilson, who resigned from the Harrisburg CBS affiliate in May after a contentious meeting with station management, is the first to publicly identify the man involved in the prostitution sting as the station’s news director.

WHP has reported briefly on the arrests but made no mention of Baer’s employment with the station. He has held the news director position since April; as of Sunday afternoon, he remains listed on WHP’s website as the station’s news director.

WHP general manager Arthur Hasson has not responded to TVSpy’s request for comment.

Kirk Wilson: I Resigned From WHP After Being Told I Was ‘Painful to Watch’

Kirk Wilson is speaking out about his departure from WHP, the CBS affiliate in Harrisburg, Pa. In a Facebook post Tuesday, Wilson said he resigned after he was told he “didn’t meet the reporting standards” of Sinclair Broadcast Group at a meeting with news director David Baer and general manager Arthur Hasson.

According to the Patriot-News, Wilson wrote:

I understand the news director at WHP issued an email to the staff saying I resigned. True, I signed a letter, but he’s being disingenuous.

I didn’t intend to get in this detail, but he forced the issue. I was called into a meeting with him, the general manager and the HR director. The news director told me I didn’t meet the reporting standards of SBG TV. I was “painful to watch,” neither me nor my stories were conversational. I’ll stop there. It got worse.

I was told I could participate in his aggressive re-training program. But he doubted I could improve to his satisfaction. What choice did I have? Continue to be humiliated or resign.

David, don’t make it appear like it was something I wanted to do.

Wilson spent 26 years as mayor of Carlisle, Pa. before he joined WHP in 2011. WHP was acquired by Sinclair Broadcasting last year.

Baer did not respond to TVSpy’s request for comment.

>Update: Baer told TVSpy the station does not comment on personnel issues.

David Baer Hired as WHP News Director

David Baer has been named news director for Harrisburg, PA, CBS affiliate WHP.

Arthur Hasson, WHP vice president and general manager told TVSpy, “We are very excited about the arrival of our new news director David Baer. He has an amazing background with extensive news room experience highlighted by excellence at every step. His recent experience in Albany NY is particularly appropriate given it is also a hyphenated market centered in a state capitol.”

Baer last worked as news director at WXXA in Albany, NY. The Newport owned station was bought by Shield Media last year and entered into a shared services agreement with Young Broadcasting, the owners of Albany ABC affiliate WTEN. Under the terms of the agreement, WTEN took over production of the newscasts for both stations.

Baer has also worked at WGGB in Springfield, MA, and has been a news director in Indianapolis, Raleigh, Providence, Portland, ME, and Buffalo.
