WDAY Anchor TJ Nelson Joining Rival KVRR

Anchor TJ Nelson is leaving Fargo ABC affiliate WDAY for rival KVRR, The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead reports.

Nelson, who produces and co-anchors the 5 p.m. newscast on WDAY, will anchor the 6 and 9 p.m. newscasts for Fox affiliate KVRR. He replaces Austen Schauer, who is leaving the station for a job at Park Christian School in Moorhead.

“It was not an easy choice,” Nelson told The Forum. “But these main anchor gigs don’t open up very often.”

On WDAY, reporter Todd Kurtz will replace Nelson as the co-anchor of the 5 p.m. newscast.

Austen Schauer Leaving Fargo’s KVRR

Austen Schauer is leaving Fargo, ND, FOX affiliate KVRR to work as a fundraiser for a local school, according to Fargo’s Forum.

Schauer has worked in North Dakota for 36 years. He started at WDAZ in Grand Forks, ND, in 1977. Three years later, he went to WDAY as the weekend anchor and reporter. In 2000, he joined KVRR as co-anchor and producer of the 6:00 and 9:00pm news.

The longtime Fargo anchor also leaves behind Jim Shaw, KVRR news director, who has worked with Schauer almost continuously since 1980, “This is not just another opening,” Shaw told Fargo’s Forum, “I’m losing the guy I’ve spent more hours with than my spouse.”

Schauer told The Forum, “It’ll be tough leaving Jim too. But for now, I want to concentrate on the good.” Schauer’s last day will be August 2.

Candace Thornberg Promoted to Weekday Anchor at KVRR

Candace Thornberg is moving to weekdays at Fargo Fox affiliate KVRR, according to the Fargo InForum.

Thornberg joined KVRR in 2004 as a production assistant and currently works as the weekend evening anchor. In her new role, she will anchor the weekday 6 and 9 p.m. newscasts alongside Austen Schauer.

“It’s a great opportunity, and I’ve been here several years so it’s kind of an exciting new happening,” Thornberg told the InForum.

Thornberg replaces Andrea Larson, who joined rival KVLY-KXJB last year. KVRR news director Jim Shaw said Thornberg’s replacement will likely be promoted from within.
