Storm Topples Minnesota Station’s Tower

KSMQ, the PBS affiliate for Austin, MN avoided a broadcasters nightmare after they were taken off the air when their transmission tower was brought down during a fast moving storm Tuesday. Station management was preparing viewers for the reality of the station remaining dark for anywhere from a couple of days to two weeks.

The station posted a picture of the broken tower and an explanation of what viewers could expect from station president and general manager Eric Olson to their website.

However, a post to the station’s Facebook page last night credits the hard work of chief engineer Tim Gassmann and KTTC, the local NBC affiliate, in returning the station to the airwaves. See the post after the jump.

Former KVUE and WFAA Reporter Premieres Documentary at SXSW

A documentary produced and directed by former KVUE and WFAA reporter Alan Berg is making a big splash at this year’s SXSW.

Berg’s film, “Outside Industry: The Story of SXSW,” premiered on Tuesday, marking the 25th anniversary of the influential festival.

Berg, who now runs a production company in Austin, tells Slackerwood that he began the film while working for KVUE and later WFAA:

I was a reporter with KVUE television in the late 80s, so I was working here in Austin when they had the first SXSW Music Festival. I was curious about the festival but couldn’t cover it because I was a political reporter. Finally in 1994 when I was at the affiliate in Dallas, I talked my boss into letting me branch off from politics for a weekend and come down and do something on SXSW. I did a half-hour segment, won a regional Emmy with it and caught co-founder Roland Swenson’s attention. continued…
