South Florida Anchors Join in Holiday Fun

The South Florida Sun Sentinel recruited celebrities including local news anchors from around South Florida to read “Twas The Night Before Christmas” in a video mash-up.

Included in on the holiday fun were Adam Kuperstein and Jackie Nespral from NBC owned WTVJ, Laurie Jennings and Calvin Hughes from Miami ABC affiliate WPLG, Belkys Nerey and Craig Stevens from Miami FOX affiliate WSVN along with John Discepolo and Liz Quirantes from CBS affiliate WPEC in West Palm Beach.

The video also featured players from the NFL’s Miami Dolphins and the NBA’s Miami Heat and even fight promoter Don King. Watch the video after the jump. Read more

Miami’s WSVN Confuses Florida NHL Team with Local University

“Incredible comeback on the road for your Florida Panthers,” WSVN anchor Belkys Nerey told viewers during the Miami Fox-affiliate’s 10 p.m. newscast on Tuesday, speaking about the team’s Stanley Cup playoff win.¬† “Even if you’re not a huge hockey fan, you’re going to love the way they pounced tonight.”

Well, it appears like someone in the WSVN graphics department isn’t a huge hockey fan since the station displayed the logo of the Florida International University Golden Panthers instead of the NHL’s Florida Panthers.

After Nerey threw to him for details on the game, WSVN sports director Steve Shapiro quickly clarified that they were indeed talking about the professional hockey team. [h/t Deadspin]

Fighting a Proposed Strip Club Next Door, WSVN Relentlessly Covers Opposition to It

A planning and zoning committee in South Florida made a significant ruling this week, at least according to Fox-affiliate WSVN.

A developer is trying to build a strip club next door to WSVN and the committee unanimously voted against the proposed gentleman’s club on Tuesday night. While WSVN has provided extensive coverage of the decision this week, its market rivals have devoted zero airtime to the strip club “controversy.”

Following a story from veteran reporter Patrick Fraser that all but urged viewers to attend Tuesday’s meeting, WSVN has covered the committee’s decision during all of its newscasts over the past 24 hours. Read more
