Dominic Mancuso Named GM at WOIO-WUAB

dominic mancusoDominic Mancuso has been named vice president and general manager at WOIO-WUAB, Raycom Media’s CBS and MyNetworkTV affiliates in Cleveland. He begins in his new role May 30.

“I’ve been doing as much research and learning as I can long-distance, but I really start learning the day I walk in the door,” Mancuso told the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. “That’s when I’ll really dig in and get to know the people and the operation there. But Cleveland is Raycom’s largest market, so it’s a complete thrill and honor to be chosen to lead WOIO and WUAB.”

Mancuso comes to Cleveland from Nashville, where he is the general manager at three stations owned by Sinclair Broadcasting: Fox affiliate WZTV, MyNetworkTV affiliate WUXP and CW affiliate WNAB. At WOIO-WUAB, he replaces Bill Applegate, who is retiring after 45 years in the television industry.

WOIO GM Bill Applegate Retiring

applegate_woioWOIO GM Bill Applegate told staffers at the Cleveland, OH, CBS affiliate he is retiring after 45 years in the industry.

He wrote in a memo his years at Raycom were the highlight of his career.  “I am immensely proud of our management team at WOIO-WUAB and all of our colleagues here who have contributed to our great success.”

Applegate came to Raycom owned WOIO in 2001. Recently, the station has come under scrutiny over accusations of a “sexually hostile work environment.” Read more

Cleveland Man Sues WOIO for Defamation

Courthouse News Service is reporting a high school teacher in Cleveland, OH, is suing CBS affiliate WOIO for defamation after the station reported he had child pornography on his school computer despite warnings from the man’s lawyer the information was false.

In a complaint filed by Georgio Sabino III naming WOIO, LLC and reporter Ed Gallek, “Sabino says, his ‘former legal counsel contacted defendant Gallek and informed him that child pornography was not found on any of plaintiff’s computers and that any statements to the contrary were and would be false and asked defendant Gallek not to air the broadcast.’”

The station posted a story on its website saying child pornography was found on a computer Sabino used at the high school while teaching. In the complaint, Sabino said the station removed it after a second conversation with his lawyers. Read more

Former WKYC Anchor Romona Robinson Will Join Rival WOIO-WUAB

Romona Robinson, who left Cleveland’s WKYC in December after negotiations to extend her contract failed, is joining rival WOIO-WUAB.

Robinson spent 15 years at WKYC, which is the market’s NBC-affiliate. She will begin as the afternoon and evening anchor at WOIO-WUAB, CBS and MyNetworkTV affiliates, respectively, on February 2. The move is a homecoming for Robinson, who began her career as an anchor at WUAB.

In a statement announcing her hire, the station called Robinson “one of the most respected journalists in Northeast Ohio.” Read more
