Media Beat: Brian Stelter on Being Matt Lauer’s Nemesis

Brian Stelter, who launched TVNewser almost 10 years ago, is now a published author. “Top of the Morning,” out today, lays bare a tumultuous year for network morning news shows which saw one anchor pack her bags, another face a serious health issue, a ratings leader fall — and lose a quarter of its audience — and an entirely new show launch.

In his first interview for the book, Stelter tells us about the secrecy behind “Top of the Morning,” the access he got, and what he thinks about being called Matt Lauer‘s nemesis.

Is Content Sharing Good or Bad for Local Stations?

The New York Times’ Brian Stelter examines content sharing as a “survival strategy” for local stations, noting the increase of shared-services agreements “resembles the retrenchment of the American newspaper industry, but it has been far less publicized.”

Stelter takes a look at the San Angelo market, which is home to Fox-affiliate KIDY, CBS-affiliate KLST and NBC-affiliate KSAN. KLST and KSAN operate under a shared service agreement, which the FCC estimates exist in at least 83 of the 210 U.S. television markets:

The anchors are different at the NBC station KSAN and the CBS station KLST, but they read similar scripts in side-by-side studios. It’s almost comical, for a viewer flipping the channel back and forth, to see identical segments about spot news and health. (The weather segments, however, have different graphics and hosts.) continued…

On WNYW, Occupy ‘Day of Action’ Protests Are In the Spotlight

The New York Times‘ Brian Stelter looks at the coverage of today’s Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City. The “Day of Action” includes plans to “gather at 16 central subway hubs and take our own stories to the trains,” which were a major topic of conversation this morning on WNYW:

“This is a big deal,” the Fox co-anchor Greg Kelly said as his newscast started at 7 a.m. Wednesday. “We have thousands of protesters that have indicated they are going to try to shut down the subway system as well, and occupy sixteen transit hubs across the five boroughs.” Mr. Kelly and his co-anchor, Rosanna Scotto, spoke of indications of a “shut down” plan three other times that hour.

At 8 a.m., Mr. Kelly, who is the son of Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, said of the protesters on Wall Street: “Right now they’re kind of milling about. continued…

More Political Ad Revenue Leads To Station Mergers

In today’s New York Times, Brian Stelter examines how newly-profitable stations, due largely to an uptick in political advertising, have resulted in several recent mergers of local station groups. The recent deals have spurred a renewed debate about station consolidation within the industry, especially as the FCC reviews a draft of its new broadcast ownership rules, which reportedly will eliminate restrictions on cross-ownership of television stations in the same market:

Station operators say that the F.C.C. rules make it more difficult to do business; [Sinclair Broadcasting CFO David] Amy said the regulations have hampered the industry.

The F.C.C. commissioner who has been the most critical of media mergers, Michael J. Copps, said last week that he expected “many more deals” as “the economy improves and station groups continue the quest for all those elusive efficiencies to satisfy the investors.” continued…

New York Times: Local TV News Is On the Rebound

In St. Louis, NBC-affiliate KSDK is set to unveil a new programming lineup that includes local news at 4:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., and 4:00 p.m. As Brian Stelter points out in The New York Times, KSDK is one of many stations across the country that are beefing up local programming and expanding their staffs.

Stelter lists three trends that have led to the gradual rebound of local TV: 1) advertisers have returned; 2) cable and satellite companies are ponying up retrans fees; 3) the downturn shook stations out of convention.

Here’s Stelter…

This is what the rebound in local television looks like. Three years after the business buckled under the weight of the advertising recession, the more popular stations in markets like St. Louis are adding newscasts and in some cases employees — though not as many as were dismissed during the downturn.
