WLEX Anchor Lee Cruse Joining Local Radio Station

WLEX anchor Lee Cruse is leaving stepping away from the morning anchor desk the Lexington NBC affiliate to join a local radio station, according to the Lexington Herald Leader.

“Lee’s first love was always radio,” WLEX news director Bruce Carter told the Herald-Leader. “He was in radio before he started here, and I think it’ll be a great thing for him.”

Cruse, who anchors the morning and midday newscasts, is also a stand-up comedian who travels the country performing at comedy clubs and colleges. He will join WVLK-590 AM as the 10:00 a.m. to noon anchor on May 1.

>Update: Cruse is staying with WLEX, Carter told TVSpy in an email. “Lee is still our morning live feature talent and also co-anchors a 12:30 news segment. The radio gig is an additional position with our radio partner, Cumulus,” Carter wrote.

Mary Jo Perino Leaving WLEX for Son

WLEX sports anchor, Mary Jo Perino is leaving the Lexington, KY, NBC affiliate to spend more time with her seven-year-old son.

“When I told him about it, his response was, ‘I get my mommy back,’” Perino said in a statement on the station website. “That was pretty much all I needed to hear.”

Perino has worked at WLEX for 10 years with two short stays at CNN Headline News. She hasn’t set a date for her departure.

“We’re going to miss her greatly,” said WLEX news director Bruce Carter. “But I think she’s doing the right thing for her personal life. She’s just been a tremendous employee.”

Anchor Julie Dolan Joins WLEX From WEHT

Julie Dolan is the new morning co-anchor Lexington NBC affiliate WLEX, the Lexington Herald-Leader reports.

Dolan joins WLEX from WEHT in Evansville, where she has worked since 2007, most recently as the morning anchor. At WLEX, she will anchor from 4:30 to 7 a.m. alongside Chris Goodman.

“When we put Julie on the set for her newscast audition, it was as if Chris and Julie had worked together forever,” WLEX news director Bruce Carter told the Herald-Leader. “They had great chemistry, and it was just the perfect match.” Read more

Anchor Nicole Pence Leaving WLEX for WTHR

WLEX morning anchor Nicole Pence is leaving the station later this month to join WTHR, the Lexington Herald-Leader reports.

Pence joined the Lexington NBC-affiliate in 2008 as a reporter and was promoted to morning c0-anchor in 2009. At WTHR, she will anchor the weekend morning newscasts and report during the week.

Pence, an Indiana native, told the Herald-Leader that WTHR, the NBC-affiliate in Indianapolis, was her “dream station.”

WLEX news director Bruce Carter said the station is currently conducting a national search for Pence’s replacement, though internal candidates are also being considered.
