Bob Sellers, Jennifer Waddell to Co-Anchor WZTV Morning Newscast

sellers and waddell Bob Sellers and Jennifer Waddell debuted today as the new morning co-anchors at WZTV, the Fox affiliate in Nashville. News director Bryan McGruder talks to The Tennessean about the revamped newscast, which has been developed since he took over at WZTV in February:

Bryan McGruder, news director at Fox 17 since February, pioneered the new show. He said that it would be more personality-driven, but with hard news, weather and traffic, plus an extra piece of news that the staff feels will prompt workplace conversation. He said “extra” could mean anything from a report of Bono’s impersonation of Bill Clinton to a story about how a dog saved a boy’s life.

“I don’t know if viewers have had much of a choice,” McGruder said. “If you watch (channels) 2, 4 and 5, it’s cookie-cutter, and when you watch us, you’ll get something extra and you’ll get it quickly.” Read more

Bryan McGruder Joins WZTV as News Director

Four months after his departure from WDAF, Bryan McGruder has been named news director at WZTV, the Fox affiliate in Nashville.

“We are excited to have someone of Brian’s stature and experience leading our news department at FOX17 and look forward to the impact he will have on the market. His experience running highly successful newsrooms will be a huge asset to our operations,” WZTV general manager Dominic Mancuso said in announcing the news.

McGruder was vice president of news at WDAF in Kansas City for the past decade. He has also served as news director at WJCL-WTGS in Savannah, Ga. He replaces Roberta Petterson at WZTV. [h/t Bottom Line Communications]

News Director Bryan McGruder Out at WDAF

Bryan McGruder, vice president of news for FOX affiliate WDAF in Kansas City has left the station, according to Bottom Line Communications.

No reason was given for his departure.  TVSpy reached out to WDAF general manager Cheryl McDonald for comment  We will update when we hear back.

McGruder began working for WDAF in 2002.  He previously worked at WHBQ in Memphis, WJCL-WTGS in Savannah, GA and WHNT in Huntsville, AL.

KSHB, KMBC, KCTV Offer To Cover Rival Newsroom So WDAF Staffers Can Attend Harman Funeral

Although funeral plans for WDAF meteorologist Don Harman have not yet been released, TVSpy has learned all three rival stations in Kansas City — KSHB, KMBC and KCTV — have offered help staffing the WDAF newsroom so Harman’s friends and colleagues can attend the service.

Harman, pictured here with the WDAF morning news anchors, died by suicide last Tuesday after a lifelong struggle with depression.

Kansas City Stations Refuse to Share Raw Footage with Investigators in Lisa Irwin Case

After receiving grand jury subpoenas requesting that they share video footage connected to the disappearance of 10-month-old Lisa Irwin, Kansas City stations plan to cooperate with investigators but are making an important distinction: they will submit footage that has aired but will not hand over raw footage, as the Clay County prosecutor’s office has requested.

Jim Roberts, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office, told the Associated Press this week that the subpoenas were intended to prevent KMBC, KCTVKSHB, and WDAF from discarding footage of the girl’s family and neighbors. Read more
