Longtime Austin Anchor Talks About Stepping Away from the Desk After 33 Years

judy maggio KEYE anchor Judy Maggio is retiring from the Austin CBS affiliate at the end of May.

Maggio has worked on-air in Austin for 33 years. She told the Austin American-Statesman she declined a generous contract extension from KEYE to stay.

The American-Statesman profiled the longtime Austin anchor as she prepares to step down from the anchor chair and start a new chapter in her life.

“She’s been coming into people’s homes for 33 years. Think about all the lives she’s touched,” [Walt] Maciborski said. “It’s going to be weird without her. We’re a family. We’ll have a huge hole.”

Maciborski, sports director Bob Ballou and chief meteorologist Chikage Windler said there’s no shortage of things they’ll miss once Maggio departs next week.

“She’s such an amazing journalist,” Ballou said. “We’ve been through four different owners and she’s never lost her passion, her journalistic integrity. It’s inspiring to have someone who’s not afraid to stand up for what’s right. She is the lifeblood of this station.” Read more

Hema Mullur to Join KEYE as Anchor

mullur keye croppedAustin CBS affiliate KEYE has announced Hema Mullur will join the station as co-anchor of the 5:00, 6:00 and 11:00 p.m. news.

“I am so excited to return to Texas and call KEYE and Austin home,” said Mullur in a statement. “Judy Maggio is certainly not an easy person to replace, and I hope to bring the same warmth and credibility that she has brought to Austin throughout her amazing career.”

Maggio announced her retirement from KEYE in February.

Mullur currently works at KDVR in Denver where she is an anchor. She started her career at KWES in Midland, TX. She has also worked at KFOX in El Paso.

She joins Walt Maciborksi, Chikage Windler and Bob Ballou beginning June 16th.

Chikage Windler Joins KEYE From WTHR

Chikage Windler, the weekend meteorologist at WTHR, is saying goodbye to the Indianapolis NBC affiliate. She is headed to Austin, where she will be chief meteorologist at CBS affiliate KEYE.

“It’s my last show here at WTHR-TV today at noon!” Windler wrote on Facebook Tuesday morning. “THANK YOU for watching and counting on me for your forecasts here! It’s been an honor.”

Windler begins at KEYE on March 4. She replaces Troy Kimmel, who resigned from KEYE in December. [via Indianapolis Business Journal]
