‘We Do Have Breaking News Right Now: Facebook is Down’

New York City’s WNBC took a lighthearted approach to today’s Facebook outage during its noon newscast this afternoon (video above).

“Just to keep panic at bay here, we do have breaking news right now: Facebook is down,” Contessa Brewer said. “We’re expecting this to trend on Twitter at any moment. Here’s the screen grab we have from our newsroom, where people are unforunately having trouble getting on. I got on, but nothing is uploading, nothing is updating. It just allowed me to send a friend request, that’s all.”

Brewer took to Twitter after the show to assure viewers she was being sarcastic:

Contessa Brewer Joins WNBC Anchor Desk

Contessa Brewer, who left her post as MSNBC anchor last year, is appearing on WNBC this weekend.  Brewer is filling in for weekend anchor Erika Tarantal, who gave birth this week.

“For those of our viewers who watch MSNBC, I’m sure you have seen Contessa there, but we’re welcoming her here to WNBC while Erika is taking some time off to enjoy her new baby boy, who was born last Wednesday,” Pat Battle, Tarantal’s regular co-anchor, said at the top of WNBC’s 6:00 a.m. newscast Saturday.

Brewer announced via Twitter that she is anchoring WNBC’s morning and evening newscasts on Saturday.  No word on whether Brewer’s fill-in gig at WNBC will extend beyond one day.
