How Dan Rather Changed Hurricane Coverage

Before he worked at AXS TV or CBS News, Dan Rather was a local reporter at KHOU in Houston. While he was there, the former “Evening News” anchor was instrumental in developing what is now a commonplace aspect of hurricane reporting: a graphic superimposing radar over a map.

Rather rigged up the graphic while covering Hurricane Carla near Galveston in 1961. He told us all about it when we interviewed him for the mediabistroTV series “My First Big Break.” Watch:

Dan Rather to Anchor KCTV’s Evening News

Dan Rather will anchor the 5 p.m. newscast tomorrow on KCTV, the CBS-affiliate in Kansas City.

Rather is on a promotion tour for his memoir, “Rather Outspoken: My Life in the News.” In addition to spending some time at the anchor desk, he will also do an extended interview with KCTV during the station’s 4 p.m. newscast tomorrow.

Rather began his television career at KTRK in Houston and eventually went on to anchor the “CBS Evening News” for 24 years. For more on Rather’s career, watch mediabistro’s “My First Big Break” interview with him after the jump.

>Update: Rather will not be anchoring the 5 p.m. newscast, KCTV told TVSpy this afternoon. “As it turned out, his schedule of events is making it tough for him to do the interview and try and do the show at 5 p.m.,” a spokesperson for the station said. “He will appear on KCTV5 News at 4 p.m. for an extended interview.” Read more

Pelley Continues Texas Tradition at CBS Anchor Desk

As Scott Pelley prepares to take the “CBS Evening News” anchor desk, he will continue what is becoming a Texas legacy at the position.

Iconic CBS newsman Walter Cronkite grew up in Houston and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. Dan Rather, Cronkite’s successor, was also a native of Texas and attended Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. Veteran CBS News anchor Bob Schieffer was born in Austin and graduated from Texas Christian University. Pelley is a San Antonio native and a graduate of Texas Tech.

He began his TV career at Lubbock’s KSEL in 1975 and quickly moved on to Dallas-Fort Worth, where he worked for KXAS and eventually WFAA. During his seven years at WFAA, Pelley caught the attention of CBS News and eventually accepted a job with the network in 1989.

“He was a good guy and a real pro,” remembers Texas media blogger Jim McNabb “You knew that he was bound for bigger things. He had the voice, the looks, the brains, and the talent.”
