WOIO to Christen ‘LeBron James Sports Center’ If NBA Star Returns to Cleveland

LebronStudio

As LeBron James prepares for the sequel of “The Decision,” Cleveland’s CBS affiliate WOIO is going the extra mile to woo the hometown hero back to the Cavaliers.

The station is offering to name its sports studio “The LeBron James Sports Center,” if the NBA star returns to Cleveland, where he played from 2003-2010.

“There is no better player in the league than LeBron James,” says WOIO VP and GM Dominic Mancuso. “We’re ready to welcome him back with open arms and witness forgiveness!”

“We haven’t seen this much excitement about Cleveland sports since, well, the last “Decision,” adds News Director Dan Salamone, referring to the 2010 ESPN special during which James announced he was leaving Cleveland for the Miami Heat.

Mancuso adds, “19 Action News is committed to covering the King and giving Cleveland Cavaliers fans front row seats to all the action in our newscasts LIVE… hopefully from the LeBron James Sports Center.”

ESPN reports James has finished meeting with teams, and will now talk with his family and make his choice. James is reportedly planning to attend the World Cup final in Brazil this weekend, so a decision may come before then.

Former WKYC Anchor Romona Robinson Will Join Rival WOIO-WUAB

Romona Robinson, who left Cleveland’s WKYC in December after negotiations to extend her contract failed, is joining rival WOIO-WUAB.

Robinson spent 15 years at WKYC, which is the market’s NBC-affiliate. She will begin as the afternoon and evening anchor at WOIO-WUAB, CBS and MyNetworkTV affiliates, respectively, on February 2. The move is a homecoming for Robinson, who began her career as an anchor at WUAB.

In a statement announcing her hire, the station called Robinson “one of the most respected journalists in Northeast Ohio.” Read more

WOIO Using Puppets to Cover High-Profile Trial

Faced with a ban on recording devices in the courtroom, Cleveland CBS-affiliate WOIO has turned to an unconventional method for covering a high-profile trial that’s currently underway: puppets.

Local media outlets have been closely following the trial of Jimmy Dimora, a former county commissioner charged with racketeering, since it began last week.  While its rivals have used the conventional mix of courtroom sketches and generic b-roll to illustrate the case, WOIO has opted to recreate events in the trial with puppets that look like they’ve been borrowed from a local children’s show.

WOIO news director Dan Salamone told The Plain Dealer this week that the station’s use of puppets was an attempt to provide a fresh perspective while also highlighting some of the “circus-like” aspects of the trial. Read more
