Shane Moreland Named KWWL News Director

kwwl logoShane Moreland has been named news director at KWWL, the NBC affiliate in Waterloo-Cedar Rapids-Dubuque-Iowa City. He begins in his new role May 26.

“Shane’s track record of success leading local television news operations made him the right choice for KWWL,” general manager Jim McKernan said in a statement. “He is strategic and understands multi-platform news gathering in today’s competitive environment.”

Moreland was most recently the vice president and genreal manager of WVNS, the CBS affiliate in Lewisburg, W.Va. He has also worked as the news director of WCTI-WFXI in New Bern, N.C. and WSLS in Roanoake, Va.

The station’s current news director, Dan Schillinger, is moving within Quincy Newspapers to become news director of WQOW in Eau Claire, Wisc.

KWWL Names Bloomberg TV Reporter as Morning Anchor

jennings kwwl_croppedKWWL, the Waterloo, IA, NBC affiliate, has announced Teal Jennings as co-anchor for Today in Iowa.

“Teal is a great addition to KWWL,” news director Dan Schillinger said in a statement. “She’s a skilled journalist, has the right personality for morning and noon news. Being from the area gives her extra insight in to what our viewers want to see in the morning.”

Jennings comes to KWWL from Bloomberg Television in Chicago where she was an anchor and reporter. She has also worked for KGAN in Cedar Rapids, IA.

She will join Jason Carter and Eileen Loan on the morning show starting April 30 and will also anchor the station’s Noon news.

Dan Schillinger Named WQOW News Director

schillinger_kwwlDan Schillinger is joining WQOW as news director, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier.

He has been news director for the Quincy Newspapers’ NBC affiliate KWWL since 2011. The move to the Eau Claire ABC affiliate keeps Schillinger within Quincy Newspapers.

“He brought a lot of experience to our newsroom which is helpful to some of our younger reporters,” Jim McKernan, KWWL station vice president and general manager told the Courier. “We’re grateful for Dan’s leadership.”

Schillinger came to KWWL from WJBF in Augusta, GA where he was director of news operations. He starts at WQOW in June.

Natasha Chughtai Out at KWWL

chughtai_cropped_kwwlKWWL Morning anchor Natasha Chughtai is no longer with the station.

News director Dan Schillinger wouldn’t comment on why she left the Waterloo, IA, NBC affiliate, but told TVSpy her last day was yesterday.

Chughtai came to KWWL in October 2011. She has also worked in Anchorage, AK, and Eugene, OR.

Amanda Goodman Joins KWWL From WNCT

Amanda Goodman is joining KWWL, the NBC affiliate in Waterloo, as co-anchor of the evening newscasts.

Goodman comes from Greenville, N.C., where she co-anchors the evening newscasts at CBS affiliate WNCT. She replaces Tara Thomas, who is leaving KWWL for a job with the local school district.

“It’s not an easy position to fill,” KWWL news director Dan Schillinger said in a statement. “But Amanda has the skills and the qualities we look for in a lead anchor. Her style and stories fit well with what we do here.”

Goodman begins at KWWL on July 8 and will anchor the evening newscasts beginning July 31. The official announcement from KWWL is after the jump. Read more

KWWL Subpoenaed for Interview Footage in Iowa Missing Girls Case

After being served with a subpoena, Waterloo NBC-affiliate KWWL has agreed to turn over footage of its interview with the mother of one of two missing Iowa cousins to authorities.

The cousins, Lyric Cook, 10, and Elizabeth Collins, 8, disappeared July 13 after taking a bike ride while their grandmother, Wylma Cook, was babysitting them. KWWL reporter John Wilmer interviewed Misty Cook Morrisey, the mother of Lyric, and Wylma Cook on July 20, after Morrisey stopped cooperating with the authorities investigating the case.

KWWL intends to cooperate with the subpoena, which seeks the raw, unedited footage of the interview. News director Dan Schillinger told the Associated Press that the station does not have any additional footage of the interview, which is available on its website, because it is station policy to get rid of outtakes. Meteorologist Denise Pelster to Join KWWL

Meteorologist Denise Pelster is joining KWWL in Cedar Rapids from KLKN in Lincoln.

“We’re excited to have Denice on the team,” news director Dan Schillinger said in announcing the hire. “She has great energy and the skills we look for as part of Storm Track 7.”

Pelster will serve as co-host and meteorologist on the weekend morning newscast alongside Danielle Wagner. Her first day on the air will be Saturday.

Dan Schillinger has joined KWWL, the NBC-affiliate in Cedar Rapids, IA, as news director.

Schillinger comes from Augusta ABC-affiliate WJBF, where he was news operations manager and executive producer. Prior to that, he was the news director at KCEN, the NBC-affiliate in Waco, TX, and KEVN, the Fox-affiliate in Rapid City, SD.

“The station has a long history of news leadership in Iowa but it’s not resting on past accomplishments,” Schillinger said in a statement. “I look forward to helping the staff grow and adapt to this changing media environment.” Read more
