Hartford CBS affiliate WFSB took a trip down memory lane on Sunday’s “Face the State with Dennis House.”

As an 11-year-old, David Ushery, WNBC‘s weekend anchor, hosted a Saturday morning children’s show on WFSB called “Kidsworld.” Ushery interviewed Walter Cronkite (video above) in 1979.

Cronkite told Ushery about his beginnings in the business — starting as editor of his high school newspaper — and talks about his ideal qualities in a newscaster: “a person with a sense of curiosity, with a desire to work and an ability, a physical and mental ability, to work long hours with a high degree of intensity.”

The expanded broadcast debuted Sunday. A spokesperson for the station said weekend anchors David Ushery and Erika Tarantal will continue to anchor the newscast.

WABC, WCBS, WNBC, and WNYW were there to cover the breaking news live a little after 11:30 a.m. while, as FishbowlNY points out, CW-affiliate WPIX was noticeably absent from the proceedings.

WCBS and WABC were well-positioned to provide extended coverage of the mayor’s announcement since it ended just moments before their noon newscasts.

WNYW had its morning anchor team of Greg Kelly and Rosanna Scotto do a brief recap following the press conference and then ducked to regular programming at noon.  WNBC stayed on for an extra 12 minutes following Bloomberg’s appearance as anchor David Ushery spoke with reporters Melissa Russo and John Noel via phone.
