Meteorologists Guess What America Thinks For ‘Sandy’ Relief

Last week TVSpy wrote about four local meteorologists competing on the TV game show “Let’s Ask America”. This week we got the chance to find out how the show went and how much Steve Raleigh, Ashley Brown, Denis Phillips and Lisa Hidalgo raised for the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Sandy Relief.

“Let’s Ask America” is a show similar to the “Family Feud” where contestants answer questions based on what groups of people think about certain subjects. For self-admitted science geeks like these meteorologists, that proved harder than they predicted.

“I’m a science nerd,” said WRTV meteorologist Brown. “I don’t know what normal people think. But I had fun guessing.” Hidalgo, the morning news meteorologist for KMGH in Denver echoed the sentiment, “It’s totally opposite of what we’re doing on a daily basis.”

You can watch a clip from the show after the jump. continued…

Local ABC Meteorologists Match Wits To Aid ‘Sandy’ Victims

Four meteorologists from ABC affiliates around the country will go head to head on the game show “Let’s Ask America” in order to benefit the American Red Cross.

(Pictured from left to right) Denis Phillips, chief meteorologist for Tampa Bay’s WFTS, Lisa Hidalgo, morning news meteorologist for Denver’s KMGH, Ashley Brown, meteorologist for Indianapolis’ WRTV, and Steve Raleigh, chief meteorologist for Cincinnati’s WCPO, won’t have to travel far to appear on the show which allows viewers to call in from anywhere via Skype.

The following description from the show’s websitetells what the forecasters can expect,

The game is simple: “Let’s Ask America” polls America about fun and irreverent topics to find out what people are thinking (e.g. Which of these shows did a group of prison inmates say they would choose to watch in their cell for an entire year? a) “Dr. Phil,” b) “Days of Our Lives,” c) “The View”). Then, all the contestants have to do is correctly predict the answer. The prize money increases with each question. There are three rounds and at the end of each round, the contestant with the lowest cash total is eliminated from the game.

The “Let’s Ask America” sweeps special benefits the American Red Cross to help out Hurricane Sandy victims and airs this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. For a listing of cities where you can catch the show click here.

WFTS Meteorologist’s House Struck by Lightning

WFTS chief meteorologist Denis Phillips is used to being at the center of attention when severe weather rolls through the Tampa Bay area but he never expected that he’d actually be the target of it.

“You won’t believe this…talk about irony,” Phillips wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday. “House got hit by lightning today!”

A single lightning bolt from a recent thunderstorm struck the side of Phillips’s house, carving a hole into the siding. Phillips explained:

Two big black holes in the front of the house where the bolt went in, then came out. Suffice to say, electronics pretty much fried and pipes burst. See, it CAN happen to you! Ok, maybe not you, but certainly ME!

Phillips took the unlikely incident as an opportunity to remind Tampa residents to “be safe this storm season!” [h/t Florida News Center]
