At least one station, WTTG, will go back to local coverage for the parade. Maureen Umeh will anchor, with Brian Bolter, Shawn Yancy and Sue Palka at the Canadian Embassy, Matt Ackland on the Freedom Plaza and Bob Barnard along the parade route.

ABC affiliate WSYX in Columbus aired a half-hour “election special” twice on Monday night — first at 6:30 p.m. instead of World News with Diane Sawyer, and later at 11:30 p.m., during the slot normally held by Nightline. Rather than a side by side comparison of the two major party candidates, however, the special featured some of the most partisan criticisms of President Barack Obama, and spent relatively little time examining Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

“Much of the first two years of President Obama’s term in office was spent developing and defending Obamacare — that’s the Affordable Care Act, signed into law in March of 2010,” anchor Bob Kendrick said, near the program’s halfway point. “It supposedly guarantees health care for any U.S. resident who could not obtain good health care otherwise. The biggest parts of the law go into effect in 2014, with other pieces of it rolling out over the next decade. Seattle ABC-affiliate KOMO is remembering Kathi Goertzen, a longtime anchor who died yesterday after a long fight with brain tumors. Goertzen’s longtime co-anchor, Dan Lewis, looked back at more than 25 years with the veteran anchor, calling her “the heart and soul of our news team” (video above).

KOMO presented an hourlong special, hosted by Lewis and sports director Eric Johnson, on Goertzen’s life and career last night. The pair were joined by meteorologist Steve Pool and anchor Mary Nam, who shared candid and emotional memories of Goertzen. continued…

ABC’s Diane Sawyer took some time during the “World News” tease on WJLA last night to recognize the one-year anniversary of Alison Starling and Leon Harris anchoring the 5 p.m. newscast (video above).

“I just think sometimes you have to pay attention to an anniversary,” Sawyer said, as boxes of cupcakes appeared on the anchor desk. “Eat and be merry, and we celebrate you.”

WFTV reporter Jeff Deal got a tip that the owner of a local parking lot was taking cars out for a spin while their owners were out. To investigate, Deal equipped a rented red Corvette with a tracking device and left the convertible at the parking lot. continued…

Viewers in South Bend got a glimpse behind the scenes at WBND on Friday, as the ABC-affiliate accidentally cut from “World News” to a shot of anchor Krista Fogelsong doing her hair.

Looking into a hand mirror, Fogelsong said something about “humid hair” before the station switched back to Diane Sawyer.

“Yep.. I got caught on camera,” Fogelsong wrote on Facebook, following the incident.  “Of course I was looking in the mirror. UGH.” continued…

After publicly criticizing Diane Sawyer and ABC News for inaccurate reporting on the Monday edition of “World News,” WBMA chief meteorologist James Spann was featured on the program last night in a segment about the tornado warning system.

The segment included reporting on how residents were able to get to safety before the tornadoes — with Sawyer noting “it could have been far worse” — but did not include acknowledgement or clarification of the previous night’s report, which stated that residents had “no warning” of the tornado threat.

ABC reporter Steve Osunsami said Alabama residents knew what to do “because the warnings came early” (watch above). continued…

James Spann, chief meteorologist at Birmingham ABC-affiliate WBMA, is criticizing Diane Sawyer for her report on the Alabama tornadoes on yesterday evening’s “World News.”

Spann took to his blog to criticize Sawyer’s claim the pre-dawn tornadoes “took the South by surprise last night, no warning” (watch above).

“NO WARNING? Get a clue,” Spann wrote. “This event was forecast days in advance, and the average lead times for the entire event were 20 to 30 minutes. That is plenty of time to get to a safe place.” continued…

Although New Hampshire has not set a date for the primary yet, the ABC News-WMUR debate will be held at 9 p.m.ET on the Saturday night before the voters go to the polls. ABC’s Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos will moderate, and the pair will be joined by WMUR anchor Josh McElveen.

In 2008, WMUR and ABC News presented back-to-back Democratic and Republican debates prior to the primary. “We are looking forward to producing another informative debate just days before the ‘First in the Nation’ primary and again providing New Hampshire voters with a critical look at the field of candidates,” WMUR president and general manager Jeff Bartlett said in a statement.

ABC “World News” anchor Diane Sawyer dropped by the 4 p.m. hour of the WABC newscast today. WABC is the flagship owned-and-operated ABC station and is located in the same building as ABC News in New York City.

It’s been a long day for local news outlets in the tri-state area, who have been in continuing coverage since early this morning reporting on the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. Sawyer, on hand to anchor a special edition of tonight’s “World News,” talked with WABC anchors Joe Torres and Sandra Bookman about the reporting she did for ABC overnight, as the worst of the storm passed through the city. The east coast has been busy this week prepping for Hurricane Irene, but no one expected another natural disaster shortly after 2 p.m. this afternoon — a 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck in Mineral, VA. As the closest metropolitan area, Washington, DC stations went into continuing coverage.

WJLA, the ABC affiliate, and WRC, the NBC O&O, both reported the news shortly before 2 p.m. On WJLA, which first broke in with a lower-third ticker, meteorologist Bob Ryan passed off coverage to Alison Starling and Brad Bell after 3 p.m. Interestingly, WJLA was the only DC-area station not to take the special report from their national affiliated network — ABC offered a special report to their affiliates, anchored by Diane Sawyer, at 2:13 p.m.

WRC aired an NBC news special report anchored by Savannah Guthrie in New York. Meteorologist Doug Kammerer took over after the national report and passed off coverage to Tom Sherwood and Liz Crenshaw shortly after 2:30 p.m. continued…

Shortly after midnight on Sunday, Casey Anthony was released from jail. The Orlando stations, which have followed the case for the better part of three years, were ready. All five stations in the market started coverage in primetime Saturday night and stayed on the air well past midnight, when Anthony allegedly boarded a jet at a local airport and took off for a still-unknown destination.

Fox O&O WOFL went on the air the earliest and stayed on the latest, with Keith Landry and Tracey Jacim anchoring coverage from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.

WESH stayed in regular programming until a few minutes before Anthony was released from jail. The NBC affiliate broke in to “Saturday Night Live” with coverage anchored by Cara Moore. WESH went back into regular programming at 1 a.m.
